We stayed at the Bellevue for 5 nights in late December and thought it was an excellent experience overall. The hotel is only a few steps from the main shopping street in the small village of Gstaad. Gstaad itself is an adorable, upscale Swiss village with an ice rink in the middle of town and lots of shops including a Coop grocery/department store, lots of good restaurants and the usual designer boutiques.Any and all needs for skiing can be bought/rented here with no problem.
The skiing /snowboarding is great and we were lucky during our stay to have lots of snow and gorgeous weather. Ski teachers for the kids were wonderful. My son age 17 snowboarded all over the area and especially loved the Glacier 3000 area. The concierge Olivier arranged everything with a smile.
The Bellevue is small (57 rooms) and has been redone in a funky but elegant asian style that is really striking. The junior suite was a bit crowded for two and the double room was even smaller, but the bathrooms are beautiful and well appointed. Bulgari soaps and other products are very nice. Lots of closet space but the junior suite was too crowded even for room service to bring in a table without moving the furniture. I would have liked a better sitting area in the room, but really there was no extra space. There is a desk area with one chair behind the bed , but there is nowhere to sit comfortably to read a book. The two armchairs were attractive but uncomfortable. Whille these are things I didn't like about the room, I still thought it was well done and comfortable overall.
The spa is very nice. I had a great facial and hot stones massage. Nice pool, sauna is naked coed only (I didn't go!), workout room small but well equipped. All satisfactory.
Breakfast is typical Swiss - great rolls, butter, jam, fresh orange juice and coffee or hot chocolate. Ate in both restaurants and enjoyed our meals. Room service is limited but good enough.
Ate at Le Chesery one night which was very good and had fondu at the Rossli which was very Swiss and fun. Had good lunches in the various tearrooms/confiseries around town.
The Palace Hotel is much bigger and more glitzy and is located up the hill from the village. From all I have heard, it is much more snooty but there is more going on at night. We liked the Bellevue for being without pretension and somewhat laid back, but well run and elegant.
I would definitely recommend this hotel and would stay here again if we ever return to Gstaad. It would also be fun to be there in summer. Lots of hiking and the mountains are of course beautiful. There are, however, so many other choices for skiing in Switzerland that we might have to try another place next time. If you do come to gstaad, the Bellevue is an excellent choice.
