Stayed at the Eiger for two nights while in transit from Zurich to northern Italy - I wanted to revisit an area I hadn't seen since childhood, however brief the visit had to be. The hotel turned out to be a wonderful choice - homelike and unpretentious, just across the plaza from the train station. I had a large, immaculate and comfortable room and bath off a private hallway on the side away from the station (I'd requested quiet over view.) And except for a few Saturday night merrymakers who actually turned in fairly early, it was very peaceful. in the mornings I enjoyed watching the children in the playground below my window. Everyone on the staff was incredibly helpful. They assisted me in fitting in as much as possible in a brief time, pointed out some particularly nice walking routes, gave me tips on the best way to reach my Italian destination - including printing out timetables - and in general went out of their way to make me feel pampered. I thought the food, which emphasized fresh ingredients, was wonderful. Breakfasts, though not fancy, were ample and very good, particularly the fresh-baked breads (no pre-packaged hardtack at the Eiger). I took half-board and would recommend it to anyone except fussy eaters who demand a wide choice (such as the woman who took one look at the spring rolls that were the appetizer one evening and trilled in shocked tones, "I can't eat that . . . that . . . CAKE thing!") Dinner is served in a guests' dining room and you have an opportunity to meet others staying at the hotel. I found the menu imaginative and delicious, with extensive use of what seemed to be local ingredients. There was a big salad bar, which in addition to fresh salad makings included locally cured meats. Also an interesting wine list featuring Swiss wines. This is a delightful place, one I'd like to revisit soon. It would be an ideal spot for a family vacation.
