I chose the Zurich Marriott because of the Marriott name (and my otherwise very good experiences with the chain), and because of its proximity to the city center. The building itself is no architectural masterpiece, and its location is somewhat awkward (near a very busy crossroads/intersection)... but it looks much uglier in the photos than it actually is.
There is a very nice park right across the street, not to mention a river... and you're only a 5-10 minute walk away from the sights. (Only a 5 minute walk from the main train station, if you are arriving in Zurich by rail.)
If you don't mind a little walking, and if you prefer a hotel that is a little removed from the din of city life -- then this is a good choice.
What I object to is the hotel's ranking. This is NOT a five-star or even four-star hotel. The rooms are fine, the service is fine... but nothing stands out as spectacular. For $300 a night, you'd expect much more.
In fact, our room could have used an upgrade. The bathroom looked a little worn, and the visible piping needed work. There was a cigarette hole in one of our armchairs, and the air coming from the air-conditioning (which was a nice plus, by the way -- a rarity in Europe!) smelled a little funky. None of these things was so bad that I would not recommend the hotel, or even stay there again. My only objection is, again, with the ranking. If you're expecting a five-star hotel, you'll be sorely disappointed. (Also -- if you're flying out of Zurich, the hotel does not provide a free shuttle to the airport.)
We were in Zurich in July, and as it was quite hot -- I was looking forward to taking advantage of the hotel's "spa" facilities, which featured a pool, hot tub, sauna and I'm-not-exactly-sure-what-else. Well... that was a joke. The whole "spa" area is seriously outdated, and actually looks a little dirty. The indoor pool area is so poorly ventilated, you feel like you're in the Amazon -- I was literally choking on the heat and humidity. I have to admit that I may be a little spoiled in this sense -- but when a hotel advertises as having a "spa" or "wellness center" (especially when the hotel is a "five-star" hotel), then I expect a real spa. I have been to other hotels that were far less pricey, but whose spa facilities were far superior.
In sum, the hotel is expensive for what it is. (Then again -- Zurich is a VERY expensive city.) I recommend it, but with reservations. If you're looking for a nice hotel that is close to the city, but also a little removed from it -- this will do. I do not recommend the spa, but the hotel has plenty of other things to recommend it: namely... air-conditioning, on-site parking, its location, a good bar, and a great Thai restaurant (The White Elephant).
You'll find everything you expect from a Marriott here (comfortable beds, American-style customer service... etc.), but if you want luxury -- look elsewhere.
