“Great views, good location, wouldn't stay there again”

Saint George Lycabettus Hotel

3 of 5 stars
Washington, DC
Jul 14, 2008

I stayed at the St. George for a wedding last week and did not find that it warranted the 5-star rating it has. The views are stunning and the room size was decent for Europe but I found the staff to be cold, and indifferent. The bellman was not helpful and seemed to be put out that I asked him to help with my bags. When I checked out, he seemed equally annoyed that I asked to have my bags stored until I left for the airport. When I retrieved the bags, he had used some kind of white pen (maybe it was chalk) to write my room number on the side of the luggage and despite efforts to clean it, I now cannot get the numbers off the side of the bag.

The pool can boast great views of the Acropolis but it is small and overcrowded. If you were not there by noon on the weekend, you were not going to get a chair. It also took over an hour to get a lunch order filled.

The air conditioning in the rooms was also not very effective considering the 100 degree temperature outside.

Excellent service . I am a frequent traveller and this was one of the first experience that I felt staff were not only pleasant but took real pleasure in helping customers - with a real smile on their faces.

The balcony restauant with views over the Acropolis is a must , as is the swimming pool on the hotel roof !

“Ideal - soothing and sociable at the same time”

Saint George Lycabettus Hotel

Jul 3, 2008

Myself and a girlfriend decided to hook up for a big girly catch up in Athens and after checking out some design websites I opted for us to stay at the St George and I'm so glad I did. We both work extremely hard and wanted some chill time but also some fun in the evenings and the St George was perfect. It's in an area of Athens that's up the hills from the city centre and as a result is really quiet but also has a whole range of cool boutiques just down the hill (so perfect for a bit of shopping)

When we first got dropped off and walked in the doors I thought I'd made a mistake. The decor is very 80s and black and gold - quite cheap Versace - but our room had a good balcony even if it had some bizzarre additions - like gymn hand weights in the bathroom and two toliet roll holders - one on a suspension of crystal beads - definitely different! However as soon as we headed up the the rooftop pool with it's turquoise and white, very cool sun furniture and checked out the tranquil spa I was much happier. Then we discovered the Frame Bar and Garden and the Sky Bar on the top floor and I realised that this was the perfect place for what we needed.

We had dinner on the sofas in the Frame Garden then lounged on the low seating in the bar area. As it got dark the buzz turned up and even thought it was a Thursday, the atmosphere was just right - stylish and cool but not too manic. The cocktails and champagne were even more expensive than in London but sitting there it was so worth it.

The next day, spa treaments were good and then the hotel shuttle took us into the city centre where we caught the tram to the beach. That evening the only issue that we had was that there isn't an iron in the room and we had to wait ages for housekeeping to give our clothes a really quick once over. They also charged 16 Euros just for a quick bit of ironing and it was a hassle as much as anything else although the lady was lovely.

That night we headed up the the Sky Bar - again the design and ambience is perfect and the views across to the Aropolis are unbeatable. The host guy in particular was brilliant and the staff couldn't have been more lovely. The food was brilliant too.

All in all, apart from the ironing, we couldn't fault the hotel and the newer design concepts of the bars and spa more than make up for the lobby which could probably do with some updating.

If you're looking for a cool but civilised mix of Athens buzziness and chilling out, I couldn't recommend the St George L more.

“Nice Hotel - Ok Location”

Saint George Lycabettus Hotel

4 of 5 stars
Fort Lee, New Jersey

I have been to Greece and Athens on numerous occasions, so this time, I decided to try the Kolonaki area - the hotel was beautiful, but the area was very Americanized - trying to find an authentic Greek restaurant near the hotel was impossible (though there was a nice Souvlaki take-out place nearby). The neighborhood was very pretentious and decked out in Burberry plaid - it was designer label overkill - very sickening. I was born and raised in Manhattan and you'll never see this much arrogance on Madison Ave. Anyway - back to the hotel: 1. The pool seemed nice, but was always closed when we wanted to take a swim 2. The room was very nice (comfy and spacious) and the views superb 3. We had a great balcony with views of the Acropolis 4. We loved the breakfast 5. The location was not that great - too far from the sites and no authentic restaurants nearby (not to mention – serious hills that were a drag to climb). We will be back to Athens, but we'll probably stay in the Plaka area next time.

“Not for businessmen who like a swim after work !”

Saint George Lycabettus Hotel

Jun 20, 2008

I have stayed in Athens many times on business before, and in such a hot city you need an hour round the pool after work. Got back to the Hotel at 6pm, still 85 degree's outside. Went to the pool - Closed. They actually close it early twice weekly, so if you want a swim and some sun after work, your ok wednesday onwards. Talk about a Hotel pleasing itself and not the guests.
More annoying is that they only close it because they say they only have 2 staff working it - yeah Right. One hour later they had 7 staff hanging round the bar doing nothing.
Electra Palace in Plaka has a much better pool and its open when you want to swim, so I'm back there next time.

The rest of the St George is nice. Great Bar on the roof, and down below too, but its on a very steep hill, and away from most of the action.

My personal feeling is that if your going to be a hotel, act like one, and give the proper service. You can imagine the JW Marriott in Bangkok closings its pool at 6pm can't you.
Wake up Greece !
