“Great hotel, not the best location”

Athens Ledra Marriott

Pinson, Alabama

My husband and I recently stayed at the Ledra Marriot while on a trip for business and pleasure to Athens.

Check-in was a breeze. We received our request of a room with a view... which is a view of the Acropolis from the balcony! We were walked to our room and then shown a map where all the big sites were. We even got a letter for a free bottle of wine, I think because we are Silver Rewards members. I don't think I have had such a welcoming reception at a hotel.

The room faced the busy street, but the noise never bothered us, as the sliding doors are doubled. The room was what is expected in a Marriott. Comfortable bed. Desk. Lounge chair. Balcony. Bathroom amenities were nice. The clothesline in the bathroom was also helpful.

The main downside of this hotel is its location. It is not within walking distance of the tourist attractions. The walk to the nearest Metro station is about a 15 minute walk down a busy, unpleasant street. There is a free shuttle to the city center which leaves once an hour, but the hours are limited. We used the shuttle once, but used the metro + walking and taxis the rest of the time, because of the schedule of the shuttle. I would recommend getting a taxi to the hotel upon arrival if you have luggage.

The room service was adequate. We went for an afternoon snack at the award winning restaurant in the basement. The ambiance was nice... tropical, like being in Hawaii... and the sushi was good.... but our afternoon snack cost us over 60 euro!!! I'd hate to see what it would have been for a whole meal! Overall, I can get good sushi much cheaper at home, and would save my money for some authentic Greek food while in Athens!

Although we never got in the pool, the view from the pool deck was amazing of the Acropolis. There is also na well-stocked mini-bar that even has souviners, if you forgot to buy for someone!

The hotel held our bags for us while we went to Santorini for 2 days... nice touch! It was nice to just take our backpacks, instead of all our luggage.

One note~ if you get the room rate that includes Acropolis tickets, don't forget to get reimbursed. In our hurry to catch a ferry when we checked out, we forgot to do this. I tried to get reimbured when we returned for our bags, but they refused.

Overall, I would probably stay here again, although I might try somewhere closer to the city center now that I am more familiar with the city.

“Very Nice Hotel - Not so nice location”

Athens Ledra Marriott

4 of 5 stars
Arlington, Texas
Jun 8, 2008

We stayed one night at the Marriott after completing a 12-night cruise. The taxi from Pireaus was 14 Euros. Make sure you settle on a price before you leave. Most quoted 25 Euros, expecting stupid and tired cruise ship passengers exiting the ship. The ride was 15-20 minutes.
We arrived at the Marriott around 9am and was very happy to get our room upon check-in. Perhaps being a member of the Marriott Rewards programs helped, but still - Big kudos to the Athens Marriott.
The room was very nice and had all the goodies in the bathroom. Our view was interior looking out towards other coutyard rooms.
I checked out the gym/spa in the baseroom floor and was satisified with it. No big deal, but okay. Probably better than most US properties, but not the Grand Brantiage-Athens.
The rooftop pool was FANTASTIC ! The view is great, the pool is good and the drinks are expensive. Never had a chance to try out the on-site dining options but they appear to be very nice and very expensive. The check-in/check-out staff were very good, the bellman was helpful with what to pay for taxis. He arranged for an early morning taxi to the airport for 25 Euros which was much cheaper than the 40 Euros previously quoted. The hotel also offers a comp mini-bus shuttle service to the tourist area. The ONLY minus that I would give this hotel is the location. It's on a busy street and not within walking distance of the Plaka/Acropolis area. Otherwise, the hotel is very good!

“Great stay, but...”

Athens Ledra Marriott

Fantastic hotel, great staff, "drop dead" view, but could work on the pricing for restaurants. They seem to focus on those business travelers who on are expense accounts and not the 'budget' travelers.
We will definately stay there again!

“Very good and very expensive”

Athens Ledra Marriott

4 of 5 stars
Bowling Green, Ohio

This is a very nice hotel although, in my view, not as fancy as Marriott hotels in the United States. Still, I was very happy with my room and the general look of the hotel.

The room was spacious and clean and the bath facilities were modern and spotless. The service was quite good. We didn't eat in the hotel so I can't speak about that. However, if you go out of the front of the hotel, turn left, and walk about three blocks, you find a VERY nice "Italian" restaurant called Ciao that's open throughout the day (including breakfast). We ate two breakfasts and one dinner there. As is common in Greece, there is no non-smoking portion so you need to watch where you sit if you care about this. If the weather is good, sit in the shade right outside the front door.

This hotel is NOT convenient to the various attractions, but if you're open to using public transportation you'll do fine. My wife and I always use public transportation when we can.

To get to the hotel from the airport by public transportation, take subway line 3 from the airport and get off at Syntagma Square. There is only one line at the airport and it only goes in one direction (it's the end of the line), so you can't go the wrong way.

When you get to Syntagma Square, go up to the square and walk in the direction of McDonald's. When you cross the street, you'll see bus #40 on your left. Get on. When I was there it cost 0.80 Euros (less than one Euro). In about 20 minutes you'll see the hotel on the left side of the bus. Press the red button to get off the bus and walk under the street using the pedestrian walkway.

To tour the city, I highly recommend bus #400. This is a tourist bus that visits all tourist areas on a round trip. You can hop on and off as much as you want and pay only five Euros for 24 hours. This ticket also includes all other buses and subways (except for those that go to the airport). This is a really good deal and you'll see everything you want to.

To get to bus 400, go out of the hotel and wait to take bus 40 back to Syntagma Square. Then walk halfway up the hill (towards the Parliament Building) and you'll see a big blue sign on the left for bus 400. Pay your fare on the bus.

“What a POOL!!!!”

Athens Ledra Marriott

4 of 5 stars
Birmingham, AL
May 23, 2008

I never write about or go to a pool when I am traveling abroad. This pool is awesome. After you come home from a day of traveling around greece go up to the pool drink a Methos and look at the Parthenon till it is time to retire to a very comfortable room. As far as the beauty of the hotel it is not the most superior Marriott I have ever vistied but the pool and comfortable rooms are great. I can't speak to how good the food is at the hotel, I still can't figure out why people eat at the hotel when they travel abroad. IF you are on business, fine I understand and sorry I can't help you with that. There are many good restaraunts in walking distance. I can't speak to the bus or taxis because when I was there they were all on STRIKE!!!! But I still didn't have trouble finding someone to take me around. Be patient, the locals are very nice and will bend over backwards to help. Make sure to drink some Ouzo!!!!
