My husband and I stayed at the Somerset in November 2007 to celebrate our 10th wedding anniversary and had a wonderful time. We stayed in a double room with a sea view on the first floor on a dinner B&B basis. Our room was lovely with wondeful views of the sea and our meals were great, with lots of choice. we found all the staff to be very helpful and efficient and nothing was too much for them. The entertainment was great on both nights. I would certainly recommend this hotel to my friends and we both came away from our break wishing we could have stayed on longer ... even the rain and wind couldn't spoil this hotel ... truly magical.

Tired and dated generally.

Food un-exciting and old folks home proportions.
Room/bathroom needing decorating and basic maintenance,
mattress uncomfortable and had to be changed and hopefully not swopped with another room.

The St Kilda is slightly better in most respects.

Entertainment generally poor (often embarrassing so).
Do the management ever critique their performance or added value, I doubt it as lots of elderly guests were visibly cringing.

I took a group of 40 people here for a Turkey & Tinsel break. Some of my party were disabled ( 1 guy is blind) and I was promised porters to help with luggage. No sign of any and we all had to struggle in tiny lift that was very spasmodic. Rooms were clean and comfortable as was the rest of the hotel Food was good if you were on a diet. Breakfast was 1 sos, 1 bacon, 1 egg, 1/4 slice fried bread and toast -every morning. Ask for juice at your peril, at best you got a grunt, I dont think they know how to smile. Dinner was very small. Small portion of meat 1 roast pot 2 small boiled pots and veg to be shared. Not allowed to have coffee at your table after dinner, has to be taken into lounge - "health and safety"?????
We went on Turkey & Tinsel. Everything stops at 10.30. On the Sunday we saw New Year in at 9.15 and everything stopped 10.30. This is because superior rooms are over ballroom ( I know it just gets weirder)
Complaints were ignored. I sent 2 emails. The first was ignored The second reply was quote.
"Sorry you feel like this. You obviously picked the wrong hotel. Better luck next time.
Need I say more.
