Just returned from a very relaxing three day stay at the Old England, the money spent on the refurbishment was money well spent and wiseley invested. We booked a superior room and that was well appointed, spacious and with fabulous views across Windermere. If I were to be picky there were very minor issues with housekeeping but they in no way detracted from the overall quality. I was also surprised that there was no clock in the room.
The restaurant has stunning views and sunset was glorious (the sun does shine occasionally in the Lake District). There is a wide choice of cold or cooked breakfasts available. We had dinner each night in the hotel restaurant and I cannot subscribe to the view that it was fussy. The menu was varied and all the meals we had were tasty and well presented. The soups that come as 'compliments of the chef' were memorable and the sweets are to die for. The meals were taken at a very agreeable leisurely pace. If your idea of a good meal is a plate piled high with food however this is not the place for you.
Other reviews have paid tribute to the staff and I would agree with that, we did encounter a couple of members of staff who were less forthcoming than the rest but they were in a very small minority.
Would I go back - certainly, would I recommend it to others - yes but only after I had warned them that quality does come at a price.

“Huge room, excellent staff, shame about the annex”

The room we had was huge and the bed was one of the most comfortable I've ever experienced. The staff were friendly and very helpful. The breakfast room overlooking the lake is wonderful with the most amazing selection of buffet and hot breakfasts. The swimming pool was very nice, new and we got a bit of late afternoon sun through the windows. Hylton's restaurant two minutes walk away does pretty good, unpretentious food at a reasonable price. Only complaint - we were in the cheapest (£150) rooms in the new annex overlooking the next-door pub. At about 7am the bin or laundry collection is done right under the window - not great if you're hoping for a lie in.

“Lovely hotel, average, over-fussy food”

I enjoyed my two-day business trip to the Old England. The hotel is in a picturesque spot and my room had a lovely view of the lake. The room was of average size and comfortable, although didn't feel like it had been refurbished a few months ago as claimed by the hotel. The leisure club and spa is new and was very pleasant.
My main complaint was with the food at dinner which was of average standard and in tiny quanitities...perhaps this is what you get when you are booked in on a conference rate?

“Great hotel”

We had a wonderful stay. Every member of the staff was delightful - polite and helpful, particularly the ever-helpful Claire on reception and Richard, the restaurant manager who was already ready with a dry comment. I have minor mobility issues and we had a very comfortable room, with a separate shower, not far from reception and with easy access to the spa. The dining room has a view of lake and makes breakfast an enjoyable part of the day. The pool area is clean and modern - opened just a few months ago, again with helpful staff.

“Excellent stay”

Macdonald Old England Hotel

Stayed here for two nights at the end of March 2008. We were met at the door and luggage taken in for us and taken up to our room by a porter. Our car was parked in a nearby car park by a member of staff.

We were allocated an excellent lake view room, with widescreen tv, refrigerator, tea/coffee making and hairdryer.

Excellent restaurant with a lake view, and good a la carte menu.

Staff were friendly and helpful.
