Just returned from a very relaxing three day stay at the Old England, the money spent on the refurbishment was money well spent and wiseley invested. We booked a superior room and that was well appointed, spacious and with fabulous views across Windermere. If I were to be picky there were very minor issues with housekeeping but they in no way detracted from the overall quality. I was also surprised that there was no clock in the room.
The restaurant has stunning views and sunset was glorious (the sun does shine occasionally in the Lake District). There is a wide choice of cold or cooked breakfasts available. We had dinner each night in the hotel restaurant and I cannot subscribe to the view that it was fussy. The menu was varied and all the meals we had were tasty and well presented. The soups that come as 'compliments of the chef' were memorable and the sweets are to die for. The meals were taken at a very agreeable leisurely pace. If your idea of a good meal is a plate piled high with food however this is not the place for you.
Other reviews have paid tribute to the staff and I would agree with that, we did encounter a couple of members of staff who were less forthcoming than the rest but they were in a very small minority.
Would I go back - certainly, would I recommend it to others - yes but only after I had warned them that quality does come at a price.
