We stayed at the E l Cid from July 7to 16th. We booked a 1 bedroom suite. The travel agent I booked through had been at the property and described the various rooms to me. I also decided to upgrade to the platinum level to insure an ocean view as we were going during a high travel time. When I was shown on a map how far away our room was from the beach I asked if this room had an ocean view and I was assured that yes it did. After checking in and going to our room, I could not believe what they did. Not only did we get a smaller room, but we were given a room directly over the pool! At first I thought they made a mistake and then when I went back to the lobby I was told that they have 2 different kinds of 1 bedroom suites and that they are allowed to give you whatever one they have available. I thought I was getting a room with 1 bedroom and 2 bathrooms and they gave me a big studio room and only 1 bathroom. I truly believe that what is happening is that they are over booking and then they give the customer whatever is available and hope they do not complain. My husband and I travel quite a bit and we know this kind of thing can happen. We would have appreciated the hotel management being honest with us and telling us that the room and view we paid for was not available and that they would move us the next day. Instead we were lied to. NOT OK! BAD costumer service. I was told by the receptionist that there was nothing she could do and maybe on Saturday (this was a Tuesday) they could move us. This was not the resolution I was looking for so the next day I spoke with the hotel manager and was moved to the room we paid for. Although the ocean view we now had was partially blocked by a huge palapa. I guess that was our punishment for complaining.
As far as other Platnium upgrades- don't waste your money. As I said, you don't know what kind of ocean view you are going to get. You could get a palapa in your way- there are a lot there! The butler service. Let me say, they are using the word butler very losely. We ordered pillows one night from the butler. After an hour, called again, still no pillows. After an other hour called again, still not pillows. Then we just went to bed. The butler is just another form of room service and since I'm on that subject.... very SLOW. It will take at least an hour for your food to come and that would be a fast night. Also, don't think your dishes will be gone anytime soon. One time we had room service and the dishes sat outside our room for 2 days. Ants were swarming all over. I called 4 times to have them picked up and no go. Maid service was also hit and miss. At one point we went a day and a half with no maid or turn down service. This really surprised me because I was leaving daily tips on the pillow for the maid even though tips are included in the all inclusive price.
Food- Some nights it was great, some OK, I never had anything that was bad. The waiters work really hard. So do all the workers who help clean up. The hotel is always being cleaned and they work so hard. My husband left tips every night for the waiters. The only negative about the restaurants is in the morning when the poor omelet maker was trying to make omelets for all the people in line. The line got so long, I just gave up most mornings and ate premade food. They really need to have more than one person doing omelets. Same with the smoothies. The poor smoothie lady was trying to make all those smoothies and she had to rinse out the blender inbetween each smoothie. Really should have 2 smoothie ladies. And at night at dessert time the crepe lady had to make crepes AND scoop ice cream. She was running back and forth and then the crepe line would get long. It was crazy! Can't they hire more people????
Shows- We ate dinner late and did not see much. We did see Broadway night and I must say It was a good show, but this is a family resort and that was NOT a family show. I am an elementary school teacher and I did not feel that that show was appropriate for young children.(Many of which were in the audience) Most of that show was numbers from the Broadway show Chicago and the women were scantly dressed in fishnet stockings, garters and other lingerie. Need I say more?
Beach- A little rocky- but just wear water shoes. Again workers were busy raking seaweed and cleaning. Lounge chairs always had towels.
Spa- Great and staff very nice.
Overall- Did not really like that we had to wear a silver bracelet to show we paid for platinum service and others who did not wore a blue bracelet. Didn't Martin Luther King help us get past all that?
Can't we all be treated the same?
