“A Wonderful Stay @ Sydney Shangri La”

Shangri La Hotel Sydney

5 of 5 stars
Byron Bay

Having booked through the Amex, we chose to stay on the club floor for this stay.
We were greeted with an in room checkin and an upgrade to an executive suite that overlooked the Sydney Harbor Bridge.
The room was large, clean with two comfortable beds.

The bathroom was huge with a tub sitting right next to the window and view of north Sydney, a separate shower and thick white towels.

My only complaint about the room was that the comforter on the bed was rather thick and a little too warm for me. Having said that there was a blanket in the cupboard that was perfect.

For me the best part was the service.

Each night we enjoyed the free drinks and nibbles on the 30th floor club lounge.
The concierge Jerry was very helpful and friendly. He was very helpful on the stay finding some great restaurants for us to enjoy.

If you are able I would strongly suggest paying to stay on the club floor as, at least for us, the additional attention was wonderful.

The buffet breakfast was pretty stardard 5 star hotel fare. Good selection of fruits and many asian hot food choices.
At night the dinner buffet is great with heaps of fresh seafood, and many asian choices. Please note tho it was a special chinese package they were promoting as part of the olympics?

On a slightly down side I found the spa to be dissapointing.
There was no cold water in the showers when I arrived and this took over 40 min to fix.
The sauna in the mens area was small as was the tiny plunge pool. There was no steam room which I was hoping for.

Checkout was swift and done on the club floor. There were not many people waiting when we left for the airport at noon on the Sunday.

Overall a great hotel.
Nice location if you are wanting to do some of the more touristy things in Sydney. If you are in for business you may need to check on a map.

I would recommend this hotel to friends.

Thank you to the author for taking the time to write such a glowing yet balanced critique of Shangri-La Hotel, Sydney.

Reading between the lines it appears that our author had booked accommodation on our Horizon Club Floors.

“Very nice stay at the Shangri La”

Shangri La Hotel Sydney

4 of 5 stars
Baltimore, Maryland
May 8, 2008

Just returned from 5 nights at the Shangri La, and overall had a very nice stay. The location of the hotel is excellent, and all the staff were pleasant and helpful. We arrived very early in the am and our room was ready early for easy check in. I did have a problem in which I requested a king bed and was told there was none available. I also did not get a room with "the view". Many of the rooms have a beautiful view of the Opera house and Bridge. Not mine. I tried to change but again was told there was nothing available. Otherwise, no complaints, the room was very average.
We could walk to almost all attractions in Sydney from this location and that was a plus.

Thank you very much for the kind words ‘hatescold’. Delighted to learn that you had a fabulous stay with us and we do hope that our local weather was not too cool for you; Sydney can be glorious in May!

We do regret that on this occasion we were unable to upgrade you to higher category accommodation and that the Deluxe Darling Harbour room with views over Darling Harbour, Parramatta River and west to the Blue Mountains sufficed. That said it never hurts or offends to ask the question about an upgrade when you arrive.

We do appreciate that those long haul flights into Sydney can be tough. Some guests do book the night before to ensure they have a room on arrival. For those who choose to wait for a room we run a ‘first to arrive’ wait list each morning allocating rooms by category as the previous nights guests depart and clean rooms become available.

It’s good to know that our Front Desk and Housekeeping teams were able to have you settled into your booked accommodation well before the guaranteed 3pm check-in time.

“OK (just)”

If first impressions count, check-in did not do very well. We arrived about 7am totally exhausted from Singapore having not slept. I had emailed the hotel in advance to request an early check-in if possible. I understand that if they have full capacity from the night before, this is not possible. I am a reasonable person. However, the way we were treated was oh so professional but oh so cold. If you know the character from Little Britain who says after typing vigorously on the keyboard "computer says no", it was a little like that. We were told to go and have some breakfast. A room would be available later - some time and apparently because I had informed the hotel in advance we were on the priority list. We waited and waited losing the will to live. I went back and asked again several times. More vigorous keyboard tapping. It should be ready "some time soon". "They are probably working on it". It was quite clear that she had not contacted housekeeping to check. In fact, the woman on reception made us (my partner and I) feel as if she really did not care the slightest bit about when we actually did get checked in.

The other negative point was that our room key kept on getting demagnetised. We had it nowhere near a mobile phone or anything that might cause this. Having to come back down to reception was fustrating.

On the positive side, the concierge was helpful. The room itself was spacious and very comfortable. We had a Opera House view which was nice but a pity that the windows could not be opened (a City regulation forbids it apparently or something like that).

Our stay was enjoyable but I felt that we could have done better somewhere else.

Long haul flights can be tough and guests do arrive jet lagged. Do be assured though that the very last thing we want is an unhappy customer and the sooner we have a guest settled the better. Our Front Desk supervisors allocate accommodation in the room category booked on a first arrival basis without favouritism and prejudice - although we should add that a friendly smile does go a long way when they are upgrading.

Shangri-La is one of the leading luxury hotels in Sydney offering the best views of the harbour. Fortunately we do enjoy significant demand much of which originates from the long haul destinations of Europe, North America and Asia.

Many of the long haul flights arrive at 6am and during the peak season we can have 100+ guests at 9am waiting for their accommodation to become available. Of course when occupancy is high to meet the incoming guest’s expectations we need the overnight guests to depart so that we can get into the rooms and service them for our new arrivals.

To avoid disappointment it is recommended that guests pre-register their room for the night before so that it is available when they arrive. Alternatively booking the Horizon Club Floors allows early arrivals to use the Club Lounge on level 30, complete with breakfast, refreshments, internet and importantly a quiet lounge to wait for rooms to become available.

If neither of the above is an option please see when you arrive our Guest Relations officers who will assist you to our early arrivals lounge; relax, take a shower and enjoy a coffee to feel a little more human and then perhaps avail yourself of the Concierge who will be more than happy to co-ordinate a fun morning of activity while you wait for your room to become available.

“Luxurious Room, Great View and Friendly Staff”

Shangri La Hotel Sydney

Arrived early evening after our 7 hour flight from Singapore. Even though we did not look our best after a long flight we were welcomed at the Shangri-La in a very warm and friendly manner.
We were pleasantly surprised to see our room for the first time (we had booked a Harbour View room). It was quite a big room with excellent faciities. The bathroom was lovely with a big bath tub and a separate shower cubicle. The curtains were drawn when we arrived but when we opened them we were amazed at the view we had - the Sydney Harbour Bridge, the Rocks and the Opera House. The view was stunning!! Well worth paying the extra for the Harbour View room
The hotel is in an excellent location and we pretty much walked everywhere. We were only staying a couple of nights and then picking up our hire car for the long drive to Melbourne. We were a little unsure of how to get out of the city and the best route to take. The consierge was fantastic and gaves us loads of advise and maps etc. We left our bags at the hotel while we went to pick the car up. It was easy to find our way back to the hotel and parked right outside the entrance while the porters bought our cases out and put them in the boot for us.
Overall this is a fantastic hotel in the best location. The staff are excellent and would reccommend to family and friends

Thank you LillyP for the fabulous review and for recognising our people and their customer service efforts.

The Grand Harbour view rooms are spectacular - from your ‘happy snap’ photo’s we estimate you were on the middle floors between 10th-20th.

We are delighted that you enjoyed your stay with us and more importantly that your Sydney holiday was a blast! Did you manage to find our Blu Horizon bar on level 36? Now that’s a view of Sydney!!

“Perfect Weekend at the Shangri-la Hotel, The Rocks Sydney”

My husband and I stayed 2 nights at the Shangri-la Hotel in Sydney to celebrate our 30th wedding anniversary. We were originally booked into a Darling Harbour View Room, but we were upgraded to a Grand Harbour View Room by Kuna on the reservations desk. I was touched by his kindness and extremely grateful for the upgrade, as the room was wonderful and the views were amazing. We had a magnificent view of the Harbour Bridge and the Opera House. It certainly made our stay in Sydney very special, and along with climbing the Sydney Harbour Bridge, which was also fantastic, it was certainly a weekend to remember. The staff at the Hotel were all very helpful, the service was excellent and the Hotel is beautifully appointed. The Hotel is centrally located in The Rocks and only a 5 minute walk to Circular Quay, where you can catch a ferry or train to lots of other wonderful destinations. We particularly enjoyed taking a ferry over to Manly, where they have beautiful beaches and a lovely shopping area. I can thoroughly recommend this Hotel.

Thank you (Jan) for the lovely comments and congratulations on celebrating 30 years of marriage.

Everybody loves a special occasion and we do our best to make them as memorable for our guests as we can. It’s even better when we are able to co-ordinate an upgrade and it’s so genuinely appreciated in the feedback we receive.

The kind words about Kuna in particular have seen him nominated to our ‘Customer Delight’ team which comes with both reward and recognition for his efforts. Thank you on his behalf.

We look forward to welcoming Jan again next year for her 31st.
