“A great place to wander, relax, take photos or just enjoy the view”

Royal Botanic Gardens

Make sure you spend some time exploring the Botanic Gardens while in Sydney. Even if parks aren't your thing this is a great place to see some views of the Opera House, Harbour Bridge, Harbour in general or to just relax and people watch. You can also use the walking route along the harbours edge to walk to Mrs MacQuaries Chair which is a popular tourist sight.

The Gardens themselves aren't what you may expect. They are basically a park with just some nice plants in and some good views. The name makes it suggest some dedicated establishment like London's Kew Gardens but it's basically a national park with some great views. Having said that you really do need to explore them even if it's just as a place to escape the chaos that can occur in Sydney at busy times of the day.

There are some nice plants and birds in there though for anybody that wants to see them.

If that hasn't persuaded you - for any movie buffs out there this is where the closing scenes of Mission Impossible 2 were filmed (that scene near the Opera House with Tom Cruise and the girl).

If that didn't work I don't know what to suggest - just visit them and you'll see what I mean. It'll be worth it for sure.

“Lovely and relaxing”

Royal Botanic Gardens

We arrived in Sydney at lunchtime and had the afternoon to do something, but were too tired to do anything inparticular so we had a wander through the botanic gardens. At the time they were getting ready for the new years celebrations but it was so peaceful and relaxing. The sights were amazing without having to do anything or pay anything to see them. We saw the swimming pool perched on the edge of the water, Wooloomooloo looked very nice (and expensive and full of lovely boats) and the views of the bridge and opera house were fantastic. Neither of us are into gardens or flowers but it was such a lovely afternoon and they were such wonderful gardens, definately worth a wander through!

A peaceful oasis in the middle of the city, the Botanic Gardens offer spectacular and unique views of the harbour, Opera House and the bridge. The city skyline makes a dramatic backdrop to the gorgeous plant and animal life of the park. The wide open lawns offer a welcoming spot for a picnic. Peer up into the trees and spot one of the many bats hanging out above you. Magical.

Beautiful spot to get pictures of Opera House with Bridge behind it. The grounds are very well kept and they have signs that say Please walk on the grass, The birds we saw were unique. And the bats, wow that was amazing (and not at all creepy). We spent a whole morning here one day. Do not miss it.

The botanic gardens have a prime spot along the waterfront - right next to the Opera House. I'm not that keen on plants, but there are some real stunners in here. And the atmosphere in the gardens is a lot less hectic than the rest of the touristy bits of the city.

The views of the city skyline through the foliage are brilliant.
