“Great Location, Recommend to All”

Meriton Kent St.

4 of 5 stars
Hamilton, New Zealand
Jul 6, 2008

We booked this hotel through a discount card website that we had bought (which saved us heaps off the rack rate).

We stayed three nights, and really enjoyed our time at the Meriton. We travelled with our nine month old son, and were a little disappointed that they did not have a portacot available- but were able to make do.When we arrived and both beds were made up in king-bed configuration, a simple call to reception resulted in very prompt service from housekeeping to make up the second room in single configuration. The facilities were excellent- although not all rooms (my parents had another apartment at the same time) had the numbers of glasses/cutlery you would expect for their size. Also- no dessert/cereal bowls were provided (minor things really)

The biggest problem over the weekend was the lifts with queues stretching back to the reception area at peak times. Sometimes there were only two out of a possible 6 lifts operating, which caused frustration amongst waiting guests.

The mirror above the main bed was disturbing.

We did not use any of the leisure facilities provided.

Hotel was in an excellent location- 5 minutes to Darling Harbour, 20 minutes walk to Circular Quay. Wwe were on the 47th floor with glimpses of water and little noise to be heard. It was a shame we couldn't open the balcony door though.

All in all, I would stay here again and would definitely recommend to others travelling to Sydney (especially if you can get it for a discounted rate like we did)

“Lovely location from which to explore”

Meriton Kent St.

Jun 21, 2008

I travelled by myself. Had immaculate studio, really high up with a fab view! Reception were very helpful when I turned up sans suitcase as a german lady had helped herself to my handluggage on the shuttle! Pool is tiny but very refreshing and when I was using it I was the only one! Nice facilities in your room, high specs and there is a supermarket close by. I was travelling for months so it was lovely to be able to cook my own food for a few days. I also had a lovely day trip to the blue mountains with breakfast at a wildlife park - for less than the money to climb the Sydney Bridge.

“Service from Hell !!”

I have stayed at this hotel on numerous occasions but my most recent stay was so terrible that i will never stay again.
My friends and i stayed here 2 nights ago, we organised the room as a meeting place for our best friends surprise birthday before heading out into the city.

Upon entering the room we were really disappointed because we have stayed in the 2-bedroom apartment many times before but this time we got one with a smaller living area - you had to re- arrange the whole dining area to make space to move between the table and the lounge. Not only was there the problem of space but the balcony door was locked.

We went downstairs to reception to try and have things worked out before the birthday girl got there and to my surprise the reception desk not only did not care and did not want to hear what we had to say but we were laughed at by a gentleman at the front desk named Jarryd. He told us that locking off the balcony on the weekends was a brand new policy that was put in place. Now i can understand that its company policy but there is the fact that we were misinformed over the phone when we specifically asked if the balcony was available as the birthday girl is a smoker. After being told there was nothing he would or could do for us, we headed over to their sister hotel - Meriton World Towers. Even though they have no balconys we came to the conclusion that we defintely needed a room with more space to move around. Reception told us that they had availabilities but we had to ring reservations to have them move us over there. So back to the hotel room we went to ring reservations. Daniel was happy to be unhelpful as possible and told us that he couldnt move us over because we entered the room (even though our luggage was still outside and we only came into look at the room and make the fone call). He told us if we want something done about it then we would have to talk to the reception desk. So back down we go only for them to tell us reservation were the only ones able to do something.

At this point we were sick and tired of trying to get something done and needed to start setting up the place before our guests started to arrive. We moved all the furniture ourselves out of the living area as reception 'could do nothing about it' once again, and ended up having a good night. But are very disappointed in the service of not even wanting to try to help.

I think Meriton definately need to put some new staff members on the front desk. I work in the industry myself and definately would not want people like that as the face of my company!

“Location Plus”

Meriton Kent St.

4 of 5 stars
Melbourne
May 22, 2008

Stayed two nights here over a weekend.

Location is probably the biggest plus for this place.

The studio apartment room we had was adequate. Actually the facilities such as fridge, washing machine and tv were all brand new and of good quality. I would maybe suggest getting at least a one bedroom apartment.

The view was a bit bland, but we were on a lower level and facing the wrong way. Also the pool was ice cold while the spa was lukewarm.

Place is right on the doorstep of a shopping arcade, Town Hall station and a really overpriced Vietnam restaurant (much cheaper elsewhere). Only a couple of blocks to Darling harbour and it is worth checking out the Chinese Gardens which are gorgeous.

For the price (around 180 a night) there is probably better out there, but there is no reason why we wouldnt stay there again. The other Meritons on World Tower and Pitt Street might offer more.

“Perfect - If this is what you're after...”

Meriton Kent St.

First thing I have to say is that I was very impressed with this accomodation overall, it is clean, very very very clean! We had a 1 bedroom apartment and the layout was good and facilities superb. The pool, spa and gym had me running around town trying to find some gym gear and bathers (I had not brought my own). The staff on the front desk are super-efficient, we didn't have to linger longer than 5 minutes to have everything taken care of including return airport shuttle for our checkout and the room key in hand.

At this point I have to admit, this is probably my first stay in a serviced apartment vs a hotel. This is a great cheaper option than many 5 star hotels in the area, but I did find myself missing those extra hotel benefits...the bathroom amenities are the usual bar of soap, shampoo, conditioner, bath gel, bubble bath...but we found we missed the few extra things hotels include like shower cap, cotton buds/balls. Small niggle - but we ended up making the run to the local chemist to get them.

The other major difference is that this does tend to feel like a home away from home, or someone else's place. It doesn't have the romance of a hotel, there isn't the connection with the property or the people who work there. There's no inhouse restaurant, no central lounge area to swap travel stories with strangers (apart from the hot tub).

At around the $250 we paid for the 1 bedroom apartment...for a mere $50 extra, gets us into The Intercontinental, the Westin, Marriott or a host of others which are more geared to the service aspect - anything you need etc...but that's just us.

The location is convenient for many things; trains, monorail, buses, Chinatown, Central CBD, Capital Theatre (we were here to see Billy Elliot), Chinese Gardens, Paddy's Market, Darling Harbour...everything really.

If you have kids and want to contain costs by cooking yourself, being able to do your own laundry. This place is great, it will do it.

My one key piece of advice on this hotel is DO NOT accept a room that ends in the number 1 or 2 or maybe 3. These rooms face South/South Westish (towards Liverpool St). The noise from the monorail is there, although not too bad. You will find that on Friday and especially Saturday nights is that this part of Sydney does not sleep...nor will you! This was even more in evidence come 5am on Sunday morning. The tinkle of empty bottles being transfered from one bin into a bigger bin and then probably into a garbage recycling truck went on for 90 minutes!!! Either people drink a lot, or they'd been hoarding bottles for a while - sounded like we were next to a glass recycling facility!

Maybe it's quieter if you can get up high near the 50th floor too...we were down on the 19th level which is only 4 or 5 floors above ground (street level is level 10).

Oh...and they reckon the bed was king size...small king size...my feet hung off the end and I'm 6'2". My feet don't hang off the end of my king size bed at home.
