“OK hotel but customer service needs some work”

Somerset on Elizabeth

3 of 5 stars
Somewhere in Asia
Mar 19, 2008

Rooms are a reasonable size but a bit dark and gloomy. Standard room has kitchen area, lounge and separate bedroom. Kitchen is well equipped. Bathroom especially in need of refurbishment, lots of black mould around the bath. If you have a room with a bath/shower it is impossible to turn on the shower without getting soaked with cold water first and then the water goes everywhere.

Good blackout curtains keeps early morning sun out if you are a bit jet lagged but even with the window closed the rooms are quite noisy, especially those overlooking Elizabeth Street with the trams going past (I guess the rooms at the back of the hotel would be quieter).

The rooms are individually air-conditioned but despite what all the instructions in the room say you can not control this yourself. You have to ask reception to set the temperature to your preferred setting. We played with the air-con setting in the room while we were freezing for ages before resorting to phoning reception, and then they told us only they can set it. We had to ask a few times before they actually got around to doing it.

There is no car parking available but they do offer a valet service which is charged per day, and isn't very cheap.

Broadband internet access in the room is A$90 per week. But what they don't tell you is that this is charged per computer used and not per room. This was not stated in the terms and conditions you sign up to. It seems a bit money grabbing to charge per computer when you can only use one computer at a time (there is only one cable available and no wireless). We were changed A$180 for one week access (as we used two computers), which is very expensive when you consider that Starbucks, just around the corner charge A$0.20 per minute. We initially complained to reception on receipt of the bill, they promised to look into it and get back to us but they never did. We then wrote a letter of complaint to the customer service manager, who similarly never got back to us.

Didn't have a problem with unsmiling staff as some reviewers have said but we did find on several occasions we had to ask several times before they took any action. The main problem seemed to be that most of the time there were only two receptionist on duty and they always seemed very busy - not only did they have to do a normal receptionists job but they also acted as concierge, a reception for visitors to the management offices and they valet parked the cars.

Strangely they have a policy of making you settle your bill each time it reaches A$1,500, something I've never come across anywhere before. They provide you with a copy of the invoice as soon as you reach the limit and state that unless they hear from you they will charge the amount to your credit card. There were a number of items we disputed so we spoke to reception who agreed to remove some items (like drinks from the minibar charged to our account before we even checked in) and to look into other disputed charges and get back to us. We heard nothing from them until the provided us with a copy of the credit card slip with the full amount charged, they didn't even remove the items which they had already agreed we were not liable for.

In summary good location, reasonable rooms but customer service really does need some work

“Unbeatable location, Wonderful staff, Comfy room”

Somerset on Elizabeth

Hong Kong

Being at such prime location made a huge difference to our trip in Melbourne! it's right at the mid point of town - i.e. you could pretty much walk to everywhere around CBD (from QVM to Flinders street, from William to Exhibition street. In case you're feeling lazy, the tram is at doorstep!

It's our first time in Melbourne, our first time to stay at a serviced apartment instead of hotel, our first time to rent a car. So one would expect us to have many questions. But the cheerful staff was always there to help. They may not be the as knowledgeable as the top hotels. But undoubtedly they tried their best to solve your problem! i was really impressed.

To be honest, the room wasn't fantastic but nice & comfy & clean. It certainly met my expectation based on the rate. The photo on their website are more or less showing what it really is (except the flowers & fruits in the pics which make the room looks more fancy). Spacious & comfy bed. can't complain. I read a review about noise from tram. I was quite worried and thought that might be the price you have to pay for a central location. However it turned out to be more than fine. No noise from tram at all. Only bell ringing in a nearby church on a sunday morning.

We highly recommend this place for anyone looking for a comfortable stay at the best location without paying a fortune for some expensive hotels(which may not even be as good!)

“Great location, unfriendly staff”

Somerset on Elizabeth

Dec 11, 2007

I organised a stay here recently. We booked 3 rooms. 2 x 2 bedrooms & 1 bedroom appartment. Thought the accomodation was perfect, location great.
I think if the staff had smiled their faces would have cracked. In one of the 2 bedroom appartments the a/c did not work for the first evening and even though it was Melbourne it was really hot. I rang reception 5 times and still it did not get fixed. On my 4th phone call I mentioned that there was a fuse in the switch box that was down & suggested they check this. Someone came to the room and still the air con was not fixed. After a hot and sweaty night we decided to try the switch outrselves. Low and behold the air con worked. It was very frustrating after asking for someone to fix 5 times. Never an apology, never a call to see if it was ok. Even with the air con issue it was more the way we were dealt with then the air con issue.
I should mention that we were accomodated with an early check in but just 1 smile or a friendly word would have gone a long way.
Would stay here again for great location and very reasonable price (Entertainment Book).

“Convenient Location, Average Accommodation”

Somerset on Elizabeth

3 of 5 stars
Sydney, Australia
Oct 17, 2007

We were in Melbourne with our young family (2 children) for a short break recently. We chose the Somerset on Elizabeth because of its location which is great - close to the Bourke St Mall, major shopping centres and tourist spots. The weather was good, and we mainly walked around the city or took the trams.

Our rooms were located on the back of the property therefore tram and noise from street was not an issue but I heard it does get noisy. The apartment looked tired.... carpet was stained in some places and wall corners were knocked around a bit. There were no views from the apartment, basically to car parks or nearby buildings (but we were not there for the view).

The one thing I noticed were the hardworking staff on the front desk. They have to register the guests, act as concierge and also look after valet parking as well. Hats off to them as they were run off their feet.

“Nice location, ok hotel”

Somerset on Elizabeth

3 of 5 stars
Amsterdam, The Netherlands
Sep 22, 2007

My husband and I stayed in a one-bedroom apartment at the Somerset on Elizabeth in March of 2007. The location in Melbourne is right in the downtown Central Business District, so it is adjacent to several shopping areas and downtown attractions. However, the hotel is on a main street with a tram line, so you will likely be woken up rather early in the morning when the trams begin to run.

The hotel itself is nice. The lobby is beautiful, the hallways are clean, and the rooms are in decent condition, although possibly in need of some renovations. The hotel staff was very friendly and accommodating. There were two things that were half eaten from our mini-bar, and I alerted the staff as soon as we realized it. They did not charge us for these things, but no one ever replaced them as promised either. Not really an issue for us, but worth noting, I think.

The one-bedroom apartment had a sort-of separate bedroom, made possible by a half glass wall, which seemed a bit odd, and sliding doors. The bed was ok, but felt kind of soft and old. The apartment also had a living room/dining room area, a half kitchen and a bathroom with a shower, tub and washer/dryer combo machine. The bathroom was nice and clean, although the washer/dryer combo machine seemed like it didn't really do either function well - I don't think that's the hotel's fault, I just think those combo machines aren't very good.

The kitchen area was ok, with a medium-size refridgerator, a microwave hidden behind a cupboard door, a small dishwasher and a stove top. It was definitely adequate for breakfasts and lunches (like sandwiches or a can of soup), although making a full dinner for the two of us would have been a little tricky.

Overall, I would say this is a good hotel with an excellent downtown location for travelers on a budget. But if you can afford a little more, you might want to look elsewhere. This is a solid three to three-and-a-half star facility, but it's not a higher-end facility.
