Rooms are a reasonable size but a bit dark and gloomy. Standard room has kitchen area, lounge and separate bedroom. Kitchen is well equipped. Bathroom especially in need of refurbishment, lots of black mould around the bath. If you have a room with a bath/shower it is impossible to turn on the shower without getting soaked with cold water first and then the water goes everywhere.
Good blackout curtains keeps early morning sun out if you are a bit jet lagged but even with the window closed the rooms are quite noisy, especially those overlooking Elizabeth Street with the trams going past (I guess the rooms at the back of the hotel would be quieter).
The rooms are individually air-conditioned but despite what all the instructions in the room say you can not control this yourself. You have to ask reception to set the temperature to your preferred setting. We played with the air-con setting in the room while we were freezing for ages before resorting to phoning reception, and then they told us only they can set it. We had to ask a few times before they actually got around to doing it.
There is no car parking available but they do offer a valet service which is charged per day, and isn't very cheap.
Broadband internet access in the room is A$90 per week. But what they don't tell you is that this is charged per computer used and not per room. This was not stated in the terms and conditions you sign up to. It seems a bit money grabbing to charge per computer when you can only use one computer at a time (there is only one cable available and no wireless). We were changed A$180 for one week access (as we used two computers), which is very expensive when you consider that Starbucks, just around the corner charge A$0.20 per minute. We initially complained to reception on receipt of the bill, they promised to look into it and get back to us but they never did. We then wrote a letter of complaint to the customer service manager, who similarly never got back to us.
Didn't have a problem with unsmiling staff as some reviewers have said but we did find on several occasions we had to ask several times before they took any action. The main problem seemed to be that most of the time there were only two receptionist on duty and they always seemed very busy - not only did they have to do a normal receptionists job but they also acted as concierge, a reception for visitors to the management offices and they valet parked the cars.
Strangely they have a policy of making you settle your bill each time it reaches A$1,500, something I've never come across anywhere before. They provide you with a copy of the invoice as soon as you reach the limit and state that unless they hear from you they will charge the amount to your credit card. There were a number of items we disputed so we spoke to reception who agreed to remove some items (like drinks from the minibar charged to our account before we even checked in) and to look into other disputed charges and get back to us. We heard nothing from them until the provided us with a copy of the credit card slip with the full amount charged, they didn't even remove the items which they had already agreed we were not liable for.
In summary good location, reasonable rooms but customer service really does need some work
