This hotel is very pretty from the outside but the room we were given (we were told we were upgraded upon check in to a 'deluxe') wasn't great. It was clean and had all the basics but the furnishings are rather outdated and sparse. Goodness knows what a 'standard' room would have been like.
We had dinner once in the restaurant but, again, this wasn't great and I suffered a slight stomach upset afterwards.
I actually loved the location of the hotel on St. Kilda Road - great proximity to Chapel St and an easy tram ride to the City centre of Melbourne or to St. Kilda Beach. I did find it slightly strange being in a hotel surrounded by office buildings which were ghost towns at the weekend. There aren't many/any restaurants really near by (unless you count McDonalds and Nandos) but the ease of getting trams to more lively areas means this is not a problem.
We loved Melbourne and will definitely be back - perhaps not at this hotel as we could probably find something for the same money, nearer to the centre. Hvaing said that, I do thank the Hotel Charsfield for being so close to areas such as Chapel St and St Kilda as I would probably never have discovered them otherwise!
