My wife and I spent four nights in Hotel Orion at the end of February fully expecting a basic hotel and to need our winter woolies. We needn't have worried on either score. The hotel staff were welcoming, the room clean and equipped with everything we might expect and the breakfast, especially the eggs cooked to order, set us up well each day.
Our biggest delight was the Budapest weather. We had expected Central European winter to involve wrapping up well and to include rain, wind and probably snow. How wrong we were! Temperatures reached 17c and even at night never dropped below freezing and the only rain we experienced was on the minibus trip back to the airport.
The Orion is on the Buda side of the Danube but is within a few hundred yards of the Elizabeth Bridge and an easy ten minute walk from the city centre. It also benefits from having a tram stop within 100 yards and we made great use of the three day public transport ticket to visit corners of the city that we might otherwise have missed. For example on our first day instead of walking to Castle Hill, which is just behind the Orion, we took a No. 19 tram to the terminus then a No. 6 all the way round the city centre to Moszkva ter, where we visited Mammoth 1 and 2 shopping malls, and then caught the No.10 bus up to Castle Hill. A long way for a short-cut, but it saved our legs from the steep climb and allowed us to gain an overview of Budapest from the comfort of the very efficient trams and buses.
Along the Danube promenade, on the Buda side, we can recommend the pancake restaurant in Batthany ter for a cheap snack, both the Belgian Brasserie and nearby 'Sailor's Inn' between there and the Chain bridge for a wonderful, and unexpected, choice of great beers and the restaurant just along from Hotel Orion for well cooked and presented Hungarian food at a reasonable price.
In Pest we thought that the House of Terror should be included in eveyone's itinerary, the central market was well worth a visit , the Amstel River Cafe serves great goulash soup and beef stew and Gerbeaud's coffee and cake provided the small luxury to round off our trip.
Oh, and in the middle of the Danube, Margaret Island provides a perfect location to people watch, walk in the woods and generally chill-out.
