“Great Place - even though some reviews scared me!”

Washington Suites Georgetown

5 of 5 stars
Manhattan
Apr 24, 2008

After reading the reviews, I was a little tentative but I was glad I did not change anything. Perfect Location to the Foggy Bottom metro station as well as an easy walk to Georgetown and other restaurants. Trader Joes, Papa Johns and Subway are across the street. The room was very big and clean. My two kids also loved the two flat screen TVs so there was no fighting for channels. The front desk staff was wonderful and very helpful.
The neighborhood is very safe. All in all, it is a great place to stay and I will stay there again.

The only drawback I see is if you come when the seasons are changing since you only have heat or cold in your room based on the hotel settings.

“Mean desk clerk”

Washington Suites Georgetown

Apr 22, 2008

When I checked in the desk clerk behind the counter was very rude. I think he thought we were going to have a raging party upstairs...he should know you should never judge a book by it's cover. He proceeded to be rude throughout our stay, when someone needed a cab and also upon checkout. We paid for 2 rooms, one was a Standard One Bedroom Suite & the other a Deluxe One Bedroom Suite. Once we got upstairs and saw the rooms, they were EXACTLY the same. Now why we paid $25 more for the Deluxe is beyond me. I didn't bother calling downstairs about it because I didn't want to deal with that guy's bad attitude, plus the rooms were connecting and we didn't want to move. The rooms were fine, the breakfast was good, and the location great, HOWEVER, I would NOT stay here again. I don't like being treated like that when they should be thankful we chose their hotel to stay in.

o When a request is made for connecting rooms, the only suite types available are Deluxe One Bedroom Suites. Fortunately, we were able to upgrade your second suite to a deluxe without additional charge in order to accommodate your request, due to availability.

“With Lots of Other Choices, I Don't Recommend This Hotel”

Washington Suites Georgetown

2 of 5 stars
Central Florida
Apr 16, 2008

Pros: large rooms, large flat-screen TVs, kitchens, Trader Joe's across the street

Cons: A/C system, street below noisy beyond belief, super-thin walls--
conversations from next door came through very clearly, breakfast not pleasant due to layout and crowds, and in our first room, the horrible stink coming from the kitchen sink, which the front-desk clerk had no comment about and no apology for

Even with the windows closed (which resulted in us being quite hot), I was kept awake by street noise...honking horns, sirens, yelling, motors revving...I never knew it could be so noisy at 3 am! I figured this must be because we were at the front of the building overlooking Pennsylvania Avenue, so I asked to be moved to the back of the building. Well, guess what: in the back are the dumpsters that must be emptied, and that apparently includes lots of metal-against-metal banging and large-motor compressing. Sirens are still loud from the back, too. I counted 5 different sirens in a one-hour period as I lay awake one night. Also, on our last night there, after 6 nights of not sleeping due to noise, I had to laugh at what happened next, or I would have cried. At 1:00 am, a very loud, very unidentifiable noise started. After 10 minutes I got up to look out the window. On the roof of the building next door was a man with a powerful, motorized or gas-powered water hose, cleaning some kind of metal turbine. It was VERY noisy, and it went on for over an hour. And then afterwards, of course, his tools all had to be dropped to the pavement four stories below, which was more noise. By the end, I was just laughing in disbelief. This was the noisiest hotel EVER!

Breakfast is poorly concieved...either find a better flow for it, and a bigger place, or stop offering it. It was too frustrating. We gave up after one morning and got some supplies at Trader Joe's and ate in our room.

The elevator farthest from the front desk needs checking. The door stays open just a second or two, and slammed on family members several times.

I would suggest that staff members at this hotel STAY in the rooms at this hotel. Pretend you're a guest. Live with the hotel the way it is and see what the frustrations are. Then, maybe some of this would be improved. And the hotel definitely needs to fix the AC/heat problem. That's just ridiculous.

I would NOT stay here again, with all the choices in DC. Trader Joe's is really the only good reason to stay, and it doesn't make up for all the annoyances.

Shout out to front-desk clerk Seck for his hospitality, though. All but one of the front-desk people were friendly and helpful.

o The air conditioning/heating unit has the ability to control the degree of air flow in the room. We do have a system that will only allow for either heat or air conditioning in the hotel. In the unexpected event that there is a cold snap in July, there is no way to immediately change the system over. This is when blankets are provided for the guests. If we have a heat wave in January, fans may be provided for the rooms.
o We are fortunate enough to be located in the heart of the city, so sometimes construction occurs in the area and is unavoidable. Similarly, due to the popularity of the area there is frequency passing-by of cars and busses.
o Trays are provided for the guests to take their food back to their rooms if unexpected crowding occurs or if others in the room prefer to sleep in.

“Location Isn't Everything”

Washington Suites Georgetown

2 of 5 stars
Southern California

There is no question that this hotel is in a great location. It is actually not in Georgetown, but rather just on the border, making it a short walk to get into Georgetown. The Foggy Bottom Metro station is just 2 blocks away the other direction, and therefore getting into DC to see the sites is no problem.

The suites are very large, albeit stark in terms of decor. However, the fully equiped kitchen is great, especially with a Trader Joe's just across the street. And the two flat screen TVs were much appreciated by my family.

Despite the fabulous location and large rooms, however, this hotel has a couple problems which make the stay less than ideal. As mentioned by others, the heat/AC issue is really awful. Since it is a centrally controlled system, you can turn the system on or off, but you can't choose whether it's heat or air. We were there in late March and although the outside temps were cool (30's at night, 50's in the day time), the central system was on "heat" and the room was warm and stuffy. The unscreened windows can be opened about 3 inches which provides some relief. However, since the hotel is on busy Pennsylvania Ave., the noise is awful. Even if you close the windows, the honking, sirens, trucks, etc. make a good night's sleep impossible.

In addition to the room temp and the noise, I found the breakfast to be very frustrating especially after staying for a week. The breakfast room is tiny and the continental breakfast is laid out on a very short counter. It was always crowded and hard to get through the line. (Note that we were there during spring break, so I don't know if it's always as busy.) The food was exactly the same everyday - fine but nothing exciting. Then, once you grab your food and head to the elevator to get upstairs (since there's generally no place to sit in the breakfast room), be prepared to wait for several minutes for one of the 2 elevators to come! And speaking of the elevators, we learned the hard way that the moment you press your floor button, the industrial weight doors will begin to shut!

While this hotel does have the advantages of location and large room size, I would not stay there again because of the noise and the room temperature.

“Solid Choice For Family Travel to DC With Some Caveats”

Washington Suites Georgetown

4 of 5 stars
Philadelphia

Just back from 2 nights at WS Georgetown. We were with our two kids ages 5 and 1. The suite room was ideal so we could put our little one down in one room and stay up a bit later in the other room. The kitchen was also great for the kids in preparing their meals. The room itself (second floor) had brand new carpeting and two beautiful Phillips wall-mounted LCD tvs in each room. Bathroom was more than adequate. Great location--we could easily walk to the mall with the kids in a double stroller and into georgetown at night. Cons: our hallway looked like a war zone with no wallpaper and carpets ripped up (causing my 5 year old to say "this is a really old hotel, dad!") Rennovations are fine but the front desk could have alerted us. There is no getting around the fact that the ac/heating system is horrendous. Our room was unbearably hot and there is nothing you can do to independently change the temp, much less open the windows. If you can invest in the flat screens, put in individual units or at least make it so you can open the windows. Our experience with the staff was inconsistent; our bellman upon arrival was incredibly helpful, opening the kitchen after-hours to get milk for our baby. Front desk folks were generally gracious and helpful although one woman balked at our request for after-hours milk on our second day. Our housekeeper was incredibly nice and helpful, even washing baby bottle parts for us; but the lady running the breakfast room locked the door at 10:00 on the nose and made a stink about letting me back in for more coffee (even though it was full with diners still). The breakfast was very basic: hard boiled eggs, cold cereal, yogurt, fruit and bagels/muffins. More than adequate but some reviews here seem to suggest it's something more than a basic continental breakfast. I would return to this hotel but $150 (plus parking and DC's whopping 14% room tax) is about as much as I'd want to pay.

The breakfast includes: 3 types of donuts, English muffins, white and wheat bread, apples, bananas, oranges, 3 kinds of cereal, hard boiled eggs, croissants, 3 types of Danishes, 3 types of muffins, 3 types of bagels, oatmeal, yogurt, juice, coffee, and milk. The posted weekend hours are from 7 a.m. until 10 a.m., and weekdays are from 6:30 to 9:30.
