“A very pleasant evening”

I was among a group of seven colleagues who had dinner at Tuscana in late September and had a perfectly wonderful experience. In fact, I was quite surprised to see that previous reviewers made negative comments. My experience was all positive.

We all thought the food was excellent, from the antipasto through the entrees (those in our party had many different entrees, from ravioli to bragiolle to chicken and prosciutto) to the tiramisu. In fact, discussion about the food dominated much of the evening's conversation.

The service was equally good (perhaps because we were a larger party and a stingy gratuity was out of the question), and everything was handled well. For example, we were asked -- very clearly -- if we'd like bottled water or tap water. We ordered and received tap water. No problem, no "trickery".

In fact, we had at least three people taking care of us, which was more attention than I'd expect for a party of our size. Two servers would have been more the norm for a group of seven.

As a former reporter who focused on food and beverage, it goes against the grain to write a review based on a single experience. Wtih that caveat, however, I can say my single experience was quite favorable and I won't hesitate to try Tuscana again.

“Do Not Spend Your Money Here!!!!”

I don't even know where to begin with this place. First, our waiter tricked us into ordering bottled water. We thought he was bringing us a caraf of free water for the table and then pours us water from a bottle and sets it on the table. Needless to say, we called him on it and after he huffed and puffed, agreed to take it off our bill. We then had to send back an iced tea b/c it smelled like fish water. We ordered, we received our food, he set it down and NEVER came back. He would have never known if we needed anything or if our food was OK and apparently didn't care. So I never got to mention that my ravioli was not thoroughly cooked and was very crunchy. To make matters worse, as we were walking out - he said (loudly) to another employee "that's them" very disgustingly. The place was HORRIBLE!!! BEWARE!!!!!!! DO NOT GO!!!!

I had heard of this restaurant and wanted to try it because of the live music events they have there. I went for dinner during the week when they weren't have a live music event. I was disappointed mostly in the food. We ordered specials instead of off the regular menu. The pasta fagioli was bland, very little beans or pasta, mostly sauce/soup. We ordered several seafood dishes. The seafood was overcooked. The black pasta was tasteless. The lobster raviolis were not just al dente (I can live with al dente) this stuff was uncooked. The bread was a white bread and a rosemary bread. Fresh but nothign to rave about. The wine list was odd. They say they have 4 choices by the glass but we were informed they only had one choice that night. The cannoli were fresh and tasted great. We had reservations and the restaurant was pretty empty when we arrived, yet they sat us right next to a screaming baby in a stroller parked next to a table. We asked to be moved and they moved us to the other side of the partition from the baby. (eyeroll). We asked to be moved again and they did. I was disappointed with the food here and felt it was a waste of money.

“Do NOT waste your time here”

The first time I dined here was during Restaurant Week and I didn't really have anything bad to say: the food was good (my companion wasn't as thrilled with his) and the service was okay (not particularly attentive). The second and last time I was at the restaurant did not go as smoothly. While waiting in the bar area for me, my companion had his jacket stolen. We alerted management and they were unhelpful to say the least. A better description of their attitude was: unprofessional, apathetic, and downright rude. When we mentioned that that we were obviously cancelling the reservation we had, we were greeted with, "oh, you're going to cancel?" in a very mock-innocent tone. If that is how they treat customers, they do not deserve patronage. Don't waste your time or money here as there are better Italian restaurants in the city who treat their customers appropriately.

“Didn't spend enough money to please the waiter”

I went to the Tuscana after it was recommended by the hilton garden inn around the corner. The restaraunt is trendy & hip and has a pretty igloo type oven in the middle. I was not given a wine list (all other tables around me were) I had to request this. I told the waiter I didn't know what the specials were & he just gave me a stupid look. The specials are on a flyer clipped to the inside the menu (except on my menu). One of my dinner companions shared his with me because the waiter never acknowledged my request. I ordered the ceasar salad and lobster ravioli. The Ceasar salad was good. I knew I made a mistake on the lobster before it was served... an order of stuffed shrimp went past me & left a fishy smell in the air. The lobster ravioli was strong as well. My companion ordered a pasta with tomato base sauce & enjoyed it. The waiter filled my wine glass to the top when my companion declined more wine, leaving the other dinner guest with no wine in his glass. Then the waiter asked if we would like to order another bottle of wine. (higher tab). I caught on ~ split my wine with my companion (husband). Declined dessert because I did not want to tip the waiter one cent more than what would allready be expected. Which I would have liked dessert because the portions are small & I left a little hungry. The staff works well together, the food was delivered promptly & my water glass was always full. But, I would recommend going to the cafe mozart around the other corner for german food. If you really want Italian go some place else-DC has lots of choices.
