I stayed at The River Inn for 7 nights at 167 dollars per night including tax, a great value for many reasons.
Excellent location. Bring your walking shoes! Safe, fairly quiet area. Two blocks from the Foggy Bottom GWU subway station, so only minutes away from business centers and major malls like Union Station and Pentagon City. Two blocks from Safeway, 7-11 and Trader Joe’s organic food market. A short walk to the Kennedy Center, which has 8 auditoriums constantly engaged with concerts, plays and opera.
Clean, comfortable, attractive, well-lit room. Wonderful mattress (medium firm but with luxury cushion on top) and soft, high-thread-count pure cotton sheets. Nice tile and marble bathroom, non-billowing shower curtain, nice toiletries, and the biggest, thickest towels I’ve found at any hotel.
Self-catering. Serviceable kitchenette with fridge-freezer, microwave, toaster, drip coffee-maker and gas cooker. I prepared meals in my room, on my own time schedule, at a fraction of the cost of restaurant meals.
Restaurant in-house, room service available. The restaurant, Dish, is a small, intimate, friendly establishment. The menu is not extensive, but I had 2 meals there and found the offerings excellent. For dinner I had deep-fried calamari (fresh, tender and perfectly prepared) followed by a main course of scallops which were outstanding – absolutely fresh, with a delicious crust on the outside, tender and succulent on the inside, served with a tasty lentil sauce. For breakfast I had a perfectly prepared omelet with homemade biscuits. (They automatically include an 18% tip in the bill for breakfast.)
Coin-op laundry facilities, in-room iron and ironing board, and in-room Internet access.
Helpful, professional staff in all departments.
Be aware that if you keep your room for more than 1 extra hour, you’ll be charged for an additional half-day. The hotel management seems to adhere strictly to this rule. On my last day, I wanted to stay until 3 PM to get some extra sleep, as I had a 7 PM flight and an exhausting 20-hour journey ahead of me. On principle, rather than pay for an extra half-day, I checked out at 1 PM. This was not a big issue, because my overall experience was positive; but perhaps they could have shown more flexibility for a customer who stayed 7 nights.
All in all, I'm delighted that I discovered The River Inn. It’s my hotel of choice for my next visit to DC.
