This hotel was just average. The staff was not very helpful if not non existent. I think I only saw them at the front desk and never around the hotel. Their breakfast is very expensive and there is not a very large selection. The rooms are okay as this is an older hotel. Like some other reviewers have pointed out though, it does have a strange smell to the rooms, like someone over used the cleaning materials. It does not have much to offer in extra amenities.
The area I will say is very nice. It is located in Foggy Bottom and very close to the Mall, The White House and other tourist attractions. If you want to go to the Smithsonian it is quite a walk, but well worth it. The walk is good exercise and you can walk through the Mall on your way. The location is by far the only reason I would consider giving this hotel high marks.
My husband was there for business and I tagged along to see the sights. As a lone female walking around, I felt very safe in the area we were located.

“Great value for money”

Very good location, few minutes walking to the Mall, to the White House, to the Subway and some restaurants. The area is very safe, even at night.

We stayed in this hotel for 8 nights, and as we were expecting a couple of friends for the weekend, we were upgraded to a suite, without any rate increase! It was like to be in an apartment with a living room, a kitchen, a dressing room and a bedroom with 2 queen beds. So, a good value for the price we paid, and I doubt we could have gotten a better deal in Washington! As other people said, however, is not a luxurious hotel, but when I'm in an interesting city, the hotel is only for sleeping and not for staying all day admiring it!

We've never tried the breakfast as it finished at 9:00 (a bit early if you are on holidays!), but as we had a Starbucks almost next door, and we solved that issue very quickly! Check-in and check-out was done quite fast.

Although not a 4 star hotel, is very well maintained, clean and the bed was confortable, that's what we need in this kind of holidays!

    • Liked — Spacious clean suite and location!
    • Disliked — Breakfast finished at 9:00; could hear some continuous noise of a machine at night (maybe from the street or from a central air conditioning); had to sleep with my ear plugs (but only me, so no problems for my husband and friends!).

“Funky - is that the right word?”

State Plaza Hotel

3 of 5 stars

I guess funky is the right word. For the most part the hotel was OK, but not spectacular, and not a place i'd look forward to visiting again.

When I entered the room there was an overwhelming chemical smell, toxic cleaning products I think. I can only imagine what the smell was
covering up. I opened the window and aired the room out while I was out to dinner. By the time I returned it was better, but I did leave the window open that night.

Overall the room was average. It was clean, and large. The bed was WAY
better than I had anticipated.

The location is probably the best part of this hotel - Right near all of the attractions, and on the border of George Washington University.

If this is the best deal you can find, and you aren't looking for luxury, it'll be fine. If, on the other hand you have options- I saw look around.

“OK if you need a kitchen, but not cheap, and not good service”

State Plaza Hotel

2 of 5 stars
Penang Malaysia

We booked this hotel because it had a kitchen. We're traveling with 2 small kids and eating out is impossible. Its about 4 blocks from the metro, 10 to 15 minutes walk. Next door was a liquor store and a CVS open 24 hours which had some basic groceries. The neighborhood is reasonable, not scary, lots of college students. But nothing much to eat or see until you walk 4 blocks north to Pennsylvania Ave. The rooms were very large and comfortable, and everything was very clean. Good number of cable channels to keep the kids engaged while we tried to make meals in the kitchen. Its an older hotel but in reasonable shape. Our complaints would be a loud heater system, no microwave, and only 1 pan to cook with. We had to ask 3 times to get them to give us more pans to cook with -- that got a bit frustrating. They did bring over a microwave after we complained, but the carousel didn't work. Still it was appreciated. Don't expect much service, the front desk was very polite but they don't appear to have an effective system to handle requests or problems. There are plenty of people at the front desk but none of them are interested in helping with your baggage. Trying to haul 2 kids and our baggage is an obvious challenge but no one was interested in helping. That's especially frustrating when you must climb 10 steps to get to the main hallway from the front lobby. The hotel is quite expensive, considering the age and location.

We will stay at this hotel again! It was an awesome rate, only blocks from the National Mall, with a great breakfast in the morning and helpful staff. The suites have a kitchen and wonderful 50's decor fixtures. Really great!
