“Staff is Terrible”

State Plaza Hotel

Apr 16, 2008

We got to the Hotel at 10pm and were very hungry. We asked staff to see if they were any places around to get food, and can you believe were told that all the places were closed. How can places be closed at 10pm in Washington DC when l can still buy food in Omaha at 2am. The staff was unfriendly. The credit l give them is about the rooms, very clean and the kitchen was also great. However the alarm clock did not work and the phone did not work either. Do these people check if everything is working before they book the rooms. Our room was never cleaned and when we came back at 3pm housekeeping knocked on the door to check if they could clean the room. By tthe way we thought we paid everything when we booked our flight, but guess what, when we checked out we got slammed with a $67.00 bill for parking the car for 2 nights. They have the China Bistro garden at the hotel, and their staff sucked as well, we had to leave and get food somewhere after we got there and waited for over 10 minutes and the staff kept on sorting their wine bottles and never acknowledged we were there. If l knew places that were hiring l would have given all of them the information because the staff at State Plaza, and Bistro garden need to change careers. Evidently they do not like their jobs, anything you asked the staff at State Plaza they did not know or they would give you a stupid answer.

“big rooms, great location for sightseeing”

State Plaza Hotel

The hotel has a great location. It's only 3-4 short blocks from the national mall, toward the Lincoln Memorial. It was the perfect location for the cherry blossoms, easily walkable to the tidal basin. It is also relatively close to Georgetown and GWU.

The rooms were big, much bigger than I expected for the location and the city. We had a kitchen which we didn't use. The decor was ok, nothing fancy. The bed / bedding was amazing.

There are two buildings in this hotel, and we stayed in the "back" building (toward F St), which necessitated a brief walk outside and through a garage (from the main building), but there's also an entrance on F St. There's parking there (for $30), but the staff were less than enthusiastic re giving out the parking info. Several staff members suggested parking in the street (free on weekends) and saved us the $30. You may need to drive around a bit, but it wasn't so bad for me that weekend (found a space in less than 5 minutes). Driving to the hotel wasn't too easy, like much of DC driving, but Google gave good directions.

We had one staff member who rated a 0 on check-in, and another staff member who rated a 10 on check-in, so go figure.

All in all, it was more than worth the $. We were pleasantly surprised by the rooms. The location was great. The price was very good for DC.

“Good for Sightseeing”

State Plaza Hotel

Mar 28, 2008

This hotel is in a good position for seeing the sights along the National Mall, so you are likely to spend a good time out of the room.
That's probably a good thing, because this hotel has seen better days. Its clean, though ,and the suites have a full kitchen which would be good if you have young children with you.
The furniture in our room was rickety, so much so that the chair actually fell to pieces while my son was working at the desk!
The room was cold and no amount of turning up the thermostat had any effect at all.
We got one easy chair in our suite, so if we wanted to watch TV one of us had to sit on the bed.
Breakfast was good, though, and the staff were friendly. Its a good rate at weekends so go there if you intend to not spend much time in your room .

“Great place to stay.”

State Plaza Hotel

My family is not new to traveling and are always looking to a good deal as we usally are out like most travelers looking at the sites. We were a little concerned with some reviews. This is our 1st trip to DC and we would stay here again in a heart beat. The location is perfect to all the monuments, the sub ways is 4 min way, and having CVS (store) next door was perfect for stocking up our room with food. Our family of 4 ate breakfast everyday in our room and saved 40 to 50 buck everymoring doing so. If you haven't been to DC burgers are even 10 bucks. Rooms were spacious, we did have troubles with 1 heater, but was our fault. The extra space was awsome as all the walking we spent more time in the room than usual as we ended our day earlier than most of our trips as the boys could only walk so far, us too really. Rooms were clean, maid service was perfect, towels, linen, zero glitches. Resturants were not too close but staff has a list of delivery spots which all were great, pizza and chinese. On you way to the subway there is some resturants and doughnut shops, so there is food, next door (1 block) is subway sandwich, starbuck, and another coffee house just past starbuck, which was better. Will recommend this hotel to friends and other family.

“Clean and basic downtown accomodations”

This is a good place to stay if you are looking for a basic place to sleep between meetings or sightseeing. It's well worth the cost if you can catch a daily deal around $100. Rooms were adequately clean, shower amenities were high-quality, water pressure was excellent, and linens were clean and refreshed daily. The television was small and without in-room movie services, but we were so busy with DC sightseeing that we practically fell into bed each evening -- the tv situation wasn't an issue. We were also pleasantly surprised to find a large kitchen in the room with a stove, full-size refrigerator, seating area and cabinets (no microwave). Our in-room heater/air conditioner wasn't functioning during our stay, but we didn't need any temperature adjustments.

The walk to the nearest Metro station is a touch long and can be difficult if you're carrying luggage or a laptop. And even though the hotel is nestled within GWU, we were surprised to find there were very few places to eat in the area. Head to Dupont Circle for restaurants instead. We also did not find any ice or drink/snack vending machines in the hotel; however, there is a CVS right outside the entrance -- great for water, snacks, and those items that you may have forgotten to bring.

The front desk staff occasionally seemed distracted and uninterested in guest needs. Once, a desk employee spent ten minutes finishing a personal phone call as I waited for him to answer a question. When he finally got around to me, his answer was a curt, "You'll have to go to the other front desk for that."

You should be aware that there are two entrances to the hotel; E Street and F Street; however, the E Street location is the actual front desk. Trying to transact any hotel business in the F Street lobby will end in frustration. But it is nice to have a closer exit/entrance if you're staying on that side of the hotel.

And, this is no fault of the hotel, but you should be aware that rooms on the 120's side of the hotel in the back building are next to a large dumpster which is picked up by a very loud truck every morning at 5:00am. It roused everyone in our party each morning at the crack of dawn for five days straight.
