“It was ok”

State Plaza Hotel

We were just at this hotel and it is ok for the money. We paid $75/night through priceline. You can read the other reviews about the room from other postings. They were nice, large, and clean. The hotel is hard to find getting off at the Metro station. It is a good 5 block walk from the Foggy Bottom Metro. There is NO food near the hotel at all. So, you will have to catch a cab somewhere ($11 to $15 each way). There is some small fast food on the GWU campus and a TGIFridays on Penn. Ave. The hotel is about 7 blocks from the Lincoln Mem. It you are there on vacation with kids, I would recommend staying at a hotel with a Metro in the basement! That extra 10 blocks of walking each day wastes time.
The area was very clean. We didn't feel at danger at any time day or night. However, there is a questionable looking liquor store next to the hotel and a old CVS drug store. The CVS was our junk food haven! We ate soup one night since there was no food nearby. All in all it was a good experience. I learned alot for future trips. If money is a factor, this is a good stay. Just plan on walking a bunch!

“Safe & Comfortable”

State Plaza Hotel

Spent 5 nights here; attending a national Conference. 2 adults in our room-spacious (compared to the Renaissance Convention Center), clean, quiet, dated with pink & black tiles & chrome in bathroom & stainless steel kitchen from the 50s.Very comfortable beds & pillows. Complimentary breakfast OK,-beverages & breads, pastries- no cereal or anything more than OJ if you're travelling with kids. From what I could see, the hotel restaurant is not opening any time soon. Walking distance to Lincoln Memorial, VietNam Vets, Korea, & WWII Memorial, & JFK Center for Performing Arts.
Best for adults, turn down service with chocolates.
Pharmacy & Liquor store adjacent.

“Wonderful location”

The location makes this a great place to stay. It is close to the monuments and the Lincoln Center. For walkers and joggers, it is very close to the Potomac, C&O Canal and Rock Creek pathways. The hotel is older, but my room and the common areas were clean and neat. The continental breakfast was an added bonus.

“We were forced to stay here -- good low budget place for non profit and students”

We were shuttled to this hotel by the awful management at the L'Enfant Plaza Hotel who gave away our prepaid reservations on the night of February 27, 2006. It is not at all a hotel in the same class (from the appearance of the lobby -- since we never saw the rooms at the L'Enfant Plaza Hotel) although the L'Enfant Plaza Hotel night clerk assured us it was of the same quality (clearly not the truth). The rate was $149/night. It is a hotel right off the street (unlike the L'Enfant Plaza Hotel which has a driveway) and has a very tiny lobby. Carpets are worn and stained throughout. Elevators servicing the guest floors were used by janitorial staff and to take out the trash. My business companion found a cockroach in his room on the 6th floor (room 607). My kitchenette's linoleum floor was sticky and one of the kitchenette cabinets still had the door to the minibar (with the words "MiniBar" and a lock fixture in it) on the front of it. Furniture is very worn with cheap veneer. High speed internet is an extra $9.95 a day. However, the bed was surprisingly comfortable. Room 103 is a handicapped accessible room and the handset shower would not stay fixed in a position that would allow you to use it as a fixed showerhead. Water pressure was good and water was hot. Bathroom lighting was good (incandescent) and bright, which unfortunately allows you to see the dirt and damage on the bathroom tiles. All previous comments about the horrible breakfast are correct: they don't even have ice water at the buffet. Reasonable enough if you are on a tight budget and sightseeing; horrendous if you are traveling on business or expect a delightful surprise and good value for $149/night.

“Poor customer service”

State Plaza Hotel

Feb 27, 2006

I am a regular business traveler to DC and had intended to stay at the State Plaza for the first time. Unfortunately, I had to cancel the night before my arrival.

Apparently, according to staff, would-be guests must cancel before 3:00 p.m., although that is NOT what your email confirmation will say. (Maybe they will change that.) So, if your plans change, be sure to call BEFORE 3:00 p.m., or you will be charged. (Their current cancellation policy reads: cancel 24 hours prior to arrival to avoid a penalty of one nights room and tax.)

I called the Reservations Manager, not to ask for the fees to be waived but only to point out that the written cancellation policy that they send to customers is different from the one that they verbally provide. Given that I was not insisting on a refund and only trying to point out a potential source of confusion for other guests, I was treated quite poorly on the phone.

It might be a nice place to stay, but I won't be booking there again.
