At over $550 a night room only, a hotel should be good and the Hay Adams was great. I was especially pleased as the hotel was so busy they upgraded me to something called the Federal Suite which had fantastic views of the White House and the skyline generally. But my friends were all pleased with their rooms and the staff were courteous and extremely helpful. The location is great for visiting the Smithsonian and being right opposite the White House it's got nice views and is good for visiting that area. At night there are very few places to eat nearby and our party had set dinners in a nice but dimly lit room so I can't comment on the food at the hotel more generally. There is a wonderful rooftop terrace which we had access to for business receptions. I don't know whether this is usually open to anybody but it's worth asking to go uo their to watch the sunset. that was a highlight of my trip. I stayed at the Mayflower on Conneticut Ave the night before. That was brighter and had a more spacious feel and is handier for Dupont Circle and there are a few eateries open at night nearby. But the Hay Adams has views to die, marvellous terrace & free internet (unlike the Mayflower). It's a hard choice between them. The Mayflower was cheaper, but the HA has a slighlty grander feel to the place & a nice downstairs bar which is cosy & friendly unlike the more open lobby bar in the Mayflower. But in any case, both are highly recommended!
