“2 Star Hotel - Noisy, Musty and in Disrepair”

The Latham Hotel

2 of 5 stars
Orange County, CA
Jul 21, 2008

I stayed here for 3 night in July 2008. This hotel is basically a 2 star hotel trying to sell itself as more. There's nothing wrong with an old hotel, but this place needs to be updated and have its infrastructure repaired. The place smells badly of mildew and my room's central AC was broken so they stuck a window AC in. It worked ok, but was noisy and you had to keep in on all the time which made sleeping difficult. Rooms are small and bathrooms are tiny. The furniture in my room was old and the easy chair's upholstery was worn off on the arms. It should have been retired years ago. Its in a good location relative to shops and restaurants on Georgetown, but is very noisy from street traffic and drunk revelers. I would never stay here again due to the poor condition of the hotel and would look for a hotel that's further off the main street.

“Good enough”

The Latham Hotel

Jul 14, 2008

Low ceiling lobby, minimally staffed but attentive . Concierge very helpful. Nice decor. I had a room with two double beds , small room ,somewhat cramped , comfortable beds but pillows were hard foam , some were "smelly". Lighting OK. .We requested refrigerators (free) took a while because none were available at the time of request. . It worked very well. Air condition unit was typically loud for not being central air. I was so tired at the end of each day that I used some ear plugs . My wife and kids didnt have a problem with the noise. It cooled very well !! The TV was small maybe 19 inches or so , didnt matter to us. The bathroom was small but adequate , without any "air flow" so it was best to leave the door open for cooling from the room. Didnt see any roaches or other insects. Room decor was ok. Pool was small but adequate and the area was loud from the roaring noise of the room air conditioners. There is an adjacent upper sun deck . No life guard on duty. News paper provided every day!!
Great location of this hotel. Walking distance to foggy bottom metro subway..better yet for $1 you can take the CIRCULATOR bus ( bus stops are numerous and close) do a tranfser at K street and 7th and go to the mall. Transfers are good for 2 hours. Numerous places to eat..not a problem there. No Wendys McDonalds nor Burger Kings close by. Plenty places for breakfast and looking at many of the b'fast menus 2 egss bacon toast , coffee ,pastry, juice abot 10 -15 bucks CVS pharmacy two blocks (limited hours) to the east and a 24hr on Wisconsin.. Georgetown university is close by. Taxi would run about $12 or so for four people. We arrived at Ronald Reagan airport and for four of us and four pieces of luggage the fare was just about $20

“Not Feeling the Latham”

The Latham Hotel

It started with the over priced parking. $35 a night is a little steep. Then the hotel staff was so-so. The elevators are slower than molasses. The halls are hotter than Africa. The room was smelly and felt old. It was super tiny. The only thing they had in the room for refreshments was 1 bottle of Figi water for $7. No robes (as stated). The shower head was sputtering. The walls and ceiling were gross, with water stains and possible mold. The cafe was a joke with the least expensive thing being one slice of cheesecake for $16 and juice and toast for $15. Some breakfast... The Air Conditioner was like a helicopter starting up everytime it came on. The thing that really took the cake was the bed. It was beyond terrible. It felt like we were sleeping on the street. We actually took the extra blanket, called for another blanket and piled that all together with the comfoter and laid on all three. I swear it was thicker than the matress itself. All we had to wrap up with was a sheet, because we had to make-shift a new matress. Thank Goodness we only had to stay one night before moving into an amazing hotel that we couldn't get that night so we had to settle for this place. Please don't waste your time or money for that matter. Yes, the location is great, but that is it. Stay elsewhere and take the metro back into Foggy Bottom.

“no A/C in DC”

The Latham Hotel

The hotel is in a great location and has a friendly, responsive staff. The building itself is an older brick structure that was reportedly remodeled in 1998. The overall appearance is fine, though it was done a bit on the cheap. The bathrooms, for example, have new sinks and counter, but the shower/tubs look old and worn in places. My group had recurrent problems with the air conditioning. It was under repair for the entire building when we arrived, followed by several rooms losing all cooling in the middle of the night. I changed rooms, only to find the A/C in that room quite noisy as it cycled on and off. (There is no central A/C, so each room has its own unit). I have found this to be a problem in other hotels at times, but this was quite a racket. As noted by at least one other reviewer, the place looks tired in places, with peeling wallpaper, water stains on the ceiling, and a microscopic swimming pool with a peeling bottom. I'm told the building is scheduled for demo and replacement, which is understandable. As noted by others, the rooms can be small, and, since there is no A/C in the bathroom, it can get hot in there. Overall, I did not have a great experience, and would be reluctant to stay there again. I don't sense the management wants to invest much in the building, which makes sense if it is going to be leveled soon. However, this is not the flawless gem of a boutique hotel you would like to see in this location.

This is a hidden jewel in DC! It's quaint hotel located in the Georgetown - a very cool area. The other reviews had us worried - but everything was wonderful and surpassed our expectations! Lots of interesting shops and restaurants within 2-3 blocks of the hotel. The staff was very friendly and recommended some good local restaurants. The rooms are a little small but we were out on the town so much who noticed! We had drinks in Citronelle - love their selection of martinis and wines. We will definitely be back.
