“Terrific Room with a Fabulous View”

The Westin Embassy Row, Washington D.C.

4 of 5 stars
Chicago
May 31, 2008

This classic-style hotel put us into a fresh, clean, and comfortable room that afforded us a beautiful view of the Washington Monument from our 8th Floor corner location. The $160/night deal we found on hotels.com made this stay a bargain. Having stayed at both the Westin Grand and the Westin Embassy Row, we prefer Embassy Row for its outstanding location.

The lobby is small and simple. The style is classic, bordering on fuddy-duddy. Overall, though, the atmosphere is relaxed, the staff is friendly and the housekeeping is well-run.

Some pluses:
- The location is ideal. Restaurants, coffee houses, parks, metro stations, shopping all are walking distance. It's also a relatively tranquil neighborhood.

- Very pet friendly. Our four legged traveler received complimentary bowls, treats and scratches from the attentive staff.

A few nits:

- As of May 2008. the hotel was still undergoing renovation so large sections were closed, as were some amenities like ice machines (room service will deliver for free).

- One of the elevators was closed for renovation during our stay, burdening the sole working elevator with double duty. The space at the elevator lobby is quite cramped.

- The Wi-Fi internet service was terrible. We lost connections, had freeze-ups. When connected, the speed felt like dial-up. The hotel refunded the charges to us, but we still had to schlep over to Starbucks next door to get connected.

All-in-all, terrific hotel. We'll stay there again and we'll recommend it to others.

“I liked it”

The Westin Embassy Row, Washington D.C.

Apr 30, 2008

I booked the Westin through Priceline, so you get what you get. I was a bit nervous having read mediocre reviews and the fact that it was being renovated. But I got a decent deal at $95 a night. I asked for a quiet room with a view on my booking which is usually ignored but it can't hurt to try. They did actually give me a room on the top floor (8th) with somewhat of a view.

My room was small, with a king bed but totally renovated. In all as a single traveller I liked it alot. The "Heavenly Bed" was super comfortable, the wireless internet was free and worked well and the rooms had individual temperature controls that worked well. I like it on the cool side and it made it nice and cold. Two people would be slightly cramped I'd say, lots of walking around each other but not that bad. The room also had a nice 32" flat screen TV and an okay channel selection.

The bathroom was a bit small but not bad, decent room around the sink for your stuff. They had a nice bathrobe and plenty of towels. The water pressure was a little light for my tastes, but it was okay. I think they should upgrade those shower heads.

Things weren't perfect though, my room was over the alleyway in the back in even on the 8th floor, there was some kind of noise that woke me up early saturday morning, taking out trash or something. But not that big of a deal. The other thing that annoyed me is the wet bar. Why do hotels even have these anymore? Does anyone get a $10 water when I can get a 2 liter bottle at CVS a block away for $1.50? Just replace it with a refrigerator so I can get my own stuff without emptying the wet bar out.

The staff is extremely friendly. They go out of their way to say hello to you and ask you how your doing, even the cleaning staff. I kind of like that even though I'm a New Yorker who usually likes to be left alone haha. The cleaning staff did a nice job, i I slept late several days and they got to my room anyway after I left and also did turn down service in the evening which is nice.

I didn't get to use restaurant or room service this time around so I can't comment, but I think it was 24 hour room service which definitely gets it done. Usually I get breakfast but being in Dupont gives you lots of good breakfast options so I ate out.

I know DC well and chose to stay in Dupont, so I was very happy with this location. It's two blocks off the circle so your not right in the middle of mayhem, but your very close. 2 blocks from the Metro entrance as well. Your on the red line which requires a transfer to alot of places (ie; you need to transfer to get to the museums on the mall and the capital or the new ballpark). But it does take you right to Chinatown which is like a shopping mall now, quite a change from when I went to school in DC 18 years ago!

Overall, I'd be happy if I got the Westin again through Priceline. I would say I wouldn't stay here most likely at whatever the full price is. There's lots of other places in DC that I might choose for the full price rate, but for $95 a night, it was primo.

“Plumbing was Awful. Not a typical Westin”

The Westin Embassy Row, Washington D.C.

Apr 29, 2008

The hotel is in a great location and Dupont Circle was a lot of fun. However the hotel is still working out the kinks in its construction and our room's plumbing was completely out of whack. The cold water tap in the sink and the shower had PIPING HOT STEAMING WATER and the hot water tap had the same. Needless to say we scalded ourselves bathing and washing up. The handyman advised us to "let the water run" and then jump in the shower. The front desk would not change our room but did send up a bowl of fruit. Whatever you do, do not stay in ROOM 514. The room, bed, TV and staff were otherwise very nice. However, I am very disappointed that this hotel is considered a Westin.

“We stayed 3 nights and had a really good experience here”

The Westin Embassy Row, Washington D.C.

Apr 27, 2008

We had a wonderful time in this hotel. It is in an interesting and safe location, our suite was large, sunny, comfortable and newly renovated, the staff was great. I was worried about staying here with my family because of some of the reviews I read, but our experience was fine by and large. We stayed 3 nights. Yes, the A/C is noisy - but only if you run it at full throttle. The bathroom is small, but classy and very clean. They did shut the water off one day from 9 until 3, but gave us all fair warning and also provided us with a free breakfast each day in return. Overall, you do need to put up with some inconveniences due to the renovations, but in exchange the rooms are very reasonably priced and quite comfortable.

“A Tale Of Two Rooms”

The Westin Embassy Row, Washington D.C.

5 of 5 stars
Westchester, New York

From arrival to departure the outstanding courtesy of all the staff members just totally won me over. I can't remember a Mandarin Oriental, Fairmont, Ritz Carlton, etc. stay that was punctuated by so many warm greetings, offers of assistance and sincere efforts to make up for any minor inconveniences.

Yes, it's under renovation to become The Fairfax but as far as I can see all available rooms are remodeled with new beds, furniture, fixtures, etc. It was an apartment building once upon a time and the rooms are all a bit different, some small, some with tubs, some with little counter space at the bathroom vanity. There wasn't any noise or dust and when they took the one functioning elevator out of service one evening there was an escort to take you to the service elevator.

We were promptly moved when the person upstairs clogged the toilet and it began to rain in my bathtub. I was given a smaller room but was promptly moved again when I protested. And they included a couple of complementary movies.

The A/C is noisey but once set on low fan and off automatic with a low enough temperature that it wouldn't cycle on and off, I slept an uninterrupted 9 hours. I didn't need my earplugs but does any savvy traveller not carry a pair?

Continental breakfast was fine and the service delivered with a smile. The valet got my car within 5 minutes of a request each time. That these were included in an unbelievable rate was just icing on the cake.....even at double I would have been happy with my stay.

I hope the hotel does well in it's new incarnation......the personnel are really an asset!
