I made the mistake of booking with Morgans before reading the reviews, thankfully it turned out to be a great stay. When I looked on this website my jaw just dropped wide open. The reviews I read made it seem as if only the people that owned timeshares were getting good treatment, otherwise it was going to be "timeshare hell". I thought our trip was ruined, and I already paid in full! I am about to tell everyone out there the truth about this place, but you must keep in mind that different situations may change the outcome of the stay. Let me explain.

It was my girlfriend and myself on the trip, we are 27 and 28, look about an average age of 25. This may be significant becuase we may actually just look to young to be able to afford a timeshare (true by the way), thus we were not hounded by the hotel to buy. So when reading my following review, please keep in mind that it is biased toward the 25-30ish travelers. I would hate to have someone have a bad stay becuase the hotel saw potential buyers in them, that they did not see in us.

The place was awesome! I bought the package that includes airfare from the mainland and the stay in a Cabana, which may not be there much longer. We arrived at the airport in San Pedro, were picked up by a taxi and taken to a water-taxi. We were then taken to the Hotel pier, and was welcomed by the front desk with the local rum-punch. They took us to our Cabana, and then left us alone. And I mean alone, we were not approched once by the hotel about timeshares. The Cabana was clean, air-conditioned, and right on the beach. And yes there is a beach. Some of these reviews say they have none, but what we walked on everyday was beautiful, white-sanded, and right by the ocean, so I am pretty sure it was a beach. Anyways, everything was great. Now a lot of people complain about the service, and this I can understand why. The service here is what can be expected throughout Belize, and yes we also stayed on the mainland. It is not as good as what most travelers might be used to, but it is honest. If they want to be nice, they will be, if they are busy, they will answer your question and continue with what they are doing. I did not, however, run into any rude customer service. I booked all my tours and diving in San Pedro, so I cannot comment on their tour office. I advise to purchase the week-long water ferry tickets for $40 per person if you are to go into town often, and we did. At the hotel the food was great, do not recommend the buffet however.

All in all it was wonderful. Great place, great pictures, great beach.

“Wonderful Resort”

Captain Morgan's Retreat

We had a great week at Captain Morgan's - the location and the property is beautiful. However, the north end of the resort is being redeveloped. Two (2) new buildings are nearing completion and a third is under construction. During the next 12 - 24 months, the 8 cabanas on the property will be removed. In the meantime, I wouldn't recommend them - I doubt they're as nice as the rest of the property and I'm sure they're not going to be as well maintained until they're removed.

Our condo was in one of the buildings overlooking the vacation club pool at the south end of the resort, so we didn't have any construction noise problems. We spoke with a couple that stayed in one of the completed condos in one of the new buildings. They said that construction work was noisy beginning about 7:00 AM, but that they spent so little time in the unit that the noise didn't matter.

As others have noted, the resort is somewhat remote - it's 3.5 miles north of town. So the variety of dining within walking distance is limited and in the past year, two nearby places closed (Caliente Norte and Pirate Pizza). However, the resort restaurant, Buena Vista, was very good and the restaurants at Belizean Shores and Journey's End are good and are within walking distance. We didn't try Capricorn because it just felt too expensive.

Guest services were friendly and efficient. Staff in the restaurant was friendly and by the laid-back standards of Belize, they were efficent. Housekeeping cleaned our condo daily and kept it looking nice. We scheduled all of our own outings, so we don't have personal experience with the on-site coordinator.

Overall, some of the negative reports I've read sound like wild exageration, combined with unrealistic expectations. Likewise, reports for trips made 3-4 years ago, but written only recently have minimal relevance. We love Ambergris Caye and Capt. Morgan's, but we appreciate that neither is a perfect location for everyone - travelers need to do their research before booking a destination.

Ok, its been a few years, but we may return to Belize so we're catching up on the review. Very dingy, small, and run-down. Dirt road and marsh-like area behind resort (if you can call it that) was strewn with garbage and I believe had a few crocs. So gross, in fact, we left the 2nd night hence forfeiting 4 days of pre-paid stay...we went to the hotel where madonna wrote "La Isle Bonita" which was very nice (look it up). The beach was unswimmable and someone even caught a bull shark off one of the other resort piers down the beach.

We hooked up with a private snorkeling/diving operator. Both he and his partner turned out to be a bit creepy and we got caught in a squall. Not the best of experiences in Belize. If you're looking for a great tranquil blue caribbean beach, this is not the place (nor is Belize in general)....snorkeling and diving are great, though...once you get out towards the reef.

The jungle phase of our trip at Chaa was, however, a great experience.......

“Customer Service is a Foreign Concept”

Captain Morgan's Retreat

Apr 29, 2008

The Captain Morgan is a nice upscale resort in Belize. I can't say anything negative about the facilities. The customer service was lacking though. Management seemed much more interested in selling time shares than helping one time guests. The event office didn't seem to care if you got what you were looking for. For an oversized American, the thing that bothered me most was were the audible fat jokes the staff made in my presence. I got so annoyed with a waiter who kept asking how many trips I made to the buffett (he didn't believe only two) that I stopped eating at the hotel. When I mentioned this to management, they didn't seem to care.

So it goes. I recommend the Captain Morgan if you're a Sports Illustrated model looking to be talked into a time share.

“Avoid by all means”

Captain Morgan's Retreat

Apr 23, 2008

Captain Morgan is vastly overated and overpriced.

Do not look at the pictures. There is not a decent beach on site.

The hotel is located 3.5 miles from San Pedro and boat transportation has to be arranged every time you want to escape the hotel restaurant (which should be escaped). $56 for a family of 4, for a return trip (less than 5 minutes). Do the math.

Only alternative: rent bikes ($10 per day) but not advised at night or golf cart (dirt road to San Pedro is terrible though)

You will need to call the hotel to pick you up at San Pedro when you get there and leave that will cost you another $30

As noted by another reviewer doing your own laundry will cost you $10

Everything (restaurant, hotel grocery store, activities) is hugely overpriced.

There are much better values on Ambergris Caye which is a great place to visit
