“Beautiful, relaxing, remote Portofino”

Portofino

May 17, 2008

We stayed in a Tree Top Suite. The view from our room and deck was stunning. The room was decorated with fresh flowers every other day. It was beautiful. The staff was the friendliest I've ever encountered. Marlon, Freda and all of the waitresess and bartenders. Mo, the boat captain was great! Both my husband and I thought the food was very good. They have a brand new pool - it has 3 levels. My favorite is 3" deep so you can tan and keep cool at the same time. The island is very remote which we loved. The hotel is 6 miles north of San Pedro. You either have to eat at the hotel or take a boat back to town. Transportation around the island is either by boat or golf cart. I personally thought the cost of the golf cart was high. We went on 3 different tours. Altun Ha, Mexico Rocks and Bacalar Chico. All were fantastic, but my favorite was Mexico Rocks because we went fishing first and I caught a beautiful fish which the guides cleaned and cooked up a beach BBQ. The Caribbean Sea is just beautiful. It was quite windy on the boat trips - keep it in mind. There are bugs depending on the time of year. They didn't bother me but my husband got quite a few bites.
Overall, we loved Portofino and will definitely will be going back!!

“A Great Honeymoon spot!! (for us anyways)”

Portofino

My new husband and I stayed a few days at Portofino for our honeymoon and had a great time. The people were wonderful there and we spent a lot of time with Orville our bartender. He was soo nice and seems to really love his job.

We stayed in the honeymoon suite and couldn't have booked a nicer room for our stay at the beach. It was very private and had by far the best view of the ocean. It was very large and even though the shower needs a little updating it still didn't make our stay any less pleasant.

The food was ok there. If you're going to stay there and eat make sure you have an all inclusive package because it is not cheap. Our food was ok everytime we ate there and our food sometimes took way too long to come out but there's a great view of the water and you kind of forget sometimes how long you're waiting.

The snorkling was a lot of fun. A little crowded but it was worth having people around while you're watching a baby sea turtle swim by. Shark Ray Alley was also great. Our guide just scoops up sharks and sting rays and lets you pet them. Not something you want to pass up. The other snorkle spot you can go it is Mexico Rocks and instead of going out there as an excursion we recommend taking the resorts kayak out 15 min and go your self on you own time.

Overall it was a great end to our wonderful honeymoon in Belize.

“Beautiful and Relaxing”

Portofino

It's been just about a year since I've been there and I'm just writing this review. But wanted everyone to know that the Portofino is a wonderful place to stay. It's not hard to get to town, the staff was very helpful and friendly & our room was beautiful. As far as some of the reviews about salty showers.. yes they taste a bit salty but they are still refreshing after being in the sea. It's almost like the salt put in water softners. They were not a problem for my husband and I. I would go back!!

“Our Honeymoon in Belize”

Portofino

Apr 8, 2008

We stayed at the Portofino for our Honeymoon and had a great time. The resort was very nice and the people there were great. The new pool is awesome and is a great substitute for not being able to swim on the beach. No where on the island does it seem like you could swim straight out from the beach.

The restaurant is okay, the food is good but not great, and the service is good. The bar is good but the bartender is awesome.

I would definitely suggest taking some of the tours that are offered. Our favorite was the full day fishing, snorkeling, and beach bbq.

The cabana we stayed in was very nice and spacious. We did not spend that much time there but it was definitely better than expected.

The resort is a little further away from the town than we had expected and is sort of a catch 22. It is nice to be far away from the town and have the peace and quiet that you would want at a resort but in order to get into town where the shops and bars are it is a 15 minute boat ride and you may have to take a ferry back if the Portofino boat has already left the town.

Overall I would say it was a great place to stay on our honeymoon.

“Good but nothing special”

Portofino

Portofino is pleasant - but don't go expecting to be able to swim straight from the beach. They were building a pool while we were there which should be finished now - however, it's disappointing not to be able to walk into the sea from the white sandy beach.

The restaurant is good but as previously mentioned in reviews - not cheap. The barman is lovely and makes fantastic Mudslides.

Definite recommendation is the snorkelling in Shark & Ray Alley - stroking nurse sharks as though they were large puppies is an experience not to be missed!
