My wife and I were staying at the Aquamarina suites end of april 2007 for 10 days of scubadiving with Aqua Dives. As soon as we arrived in the tiny San Pedro Airport, we called the hotel and were quickly picked up 5 mn later by a golf cart (cool, most people drive golf carts in this village. Lots of beach bikes too). First impression: Belizean are warm and friendly people unless you have that ugly american attitude! The check-in was quick (thanks to Giovanni). We had the oceanfront 1 bedroom suite that we requested, it had a nice balcony with... a beautiful view! Room had a nice functional kitchen, everything was very clean. We felt immediately at home and were pleased to be located downtown near all the amenities. We filled the fridge with fruits, veggies, seafood and... Belikin beer! The restaurant in the hotel was closed so... We had great breakfasts on the balcony every morning, and lunch the afternoon and at night, we cooked delicious gourmet meals most of the time as there was plenty of groceries around (from small to big supermarket). That's real life when you're fed up of all-inclusive resorts! Went only 3 times to the restaurant (''Elvi's'', ''Caramba's'' and the very good ''Blue Grill'', probably the best restaurant around) but they are not cheap unless you go eat to the little greasy corner. The beach is for relaxing on the chairs, NOT for swimming, as there is lots of sea grass and diving boats or water taxis all around. Be careful if you decide to go snorkelling. Diving in the San Pedro area was OK to Good depending on the dive we made, but the Turneffe and lighthouse areas were truly excellent, among the nicest places to dive in the world! Aquadives staff from the owner, Eduardo, to the divemasters were all very friendly and professional. This is serious, not a Mickey Mouse dive operator. All the boats are in good shape. You can rent diving equipement but it is always better (and safer) to bring your own gear. Overall, this is a divers paradise. We were quite satisfied and would go back anytime.

This is a fine place to stay if you are not looking for anything fancy.

They did pick us up at the airport and the room was clean when we got there. The view from the balcony (we stayed in a 1 bedroom suite) was beautiful (see my sunrise picture). Yes, it's a a semi-obstructed - see my pics, but still beautiful.

I like to call this the Best Western of the island. It was safe, we did have a kitchen, but only one burner worked on the stove (good thing we never really cooked - which is unusual for us). The fridge kept the Belikin cold though ;-)

The decor is very miami vice, I understand why, but one comfortable spot to sit would have been nice.

The bed was terrible. It sank and was lumpy and well, had fleas. We mentioned this on the last night there and they would have replaced it if we asked--which I believe--but we just didn't think about it because we didn't realize it was fleas. We slept the last night on the couch and the floor (with cushions down) in the living room.

The staff does a great job of trying, you just have to remember that for this island, the price is really inexpensive for the suites. Well, extremely. So I would say if you're ok with a budget-motel, this is a little step up from that but go in with that expectation and you'll be fine.

I was really disappointed about the restaurant being closed but the bar is open from about noon till 6 pm (not the 7 am to 9 am written in the book in the room) and Betty makes a MEAN pina colada (YUM!)

The location is great though, it's center of town, easy to walk to any of the restaurants -- on the beach.

Aquamarina Suites is a 4 star hotel being run by 2 star managemaent. Location is great-on the beach, right in town. The building is relatively new, with view balconies, full kitchens, great air conditioning. So if that's all you want from a hotel, this is it.
However, something's not quite right. The restaurant was closed during our stay and no one could answer why or how long. The bar was closed by 8:00 every day. The activities center was closed. The time-share office was closed. The hot tub was turned off the whole week. The room towels were thread-bare. The hot water ranged from luke-warm to tepid. The pots and pans were thrift store rejects. If this kind of stuff bothers you, beware.
DIVER'S ALERT! The dive package with this hotel uses Aqua Dives dive service. Find an alternative! Their equipment is old and unsafe, including tattered BC's with unuseable straps and air hoses with leaks (I had a leak in 3 out of 5 dives, one serious). This is a cattle call operation, trying to get a lot of people underwater and back quickly. They bunch experts and novices together. There is no buddy pairing, when you run out of air you go up by yourself. All in all not a safety oriented dive service.

We just came back from our trip on Jan. 12/07. It was indeed a unique experience. The suite we had overlooking the sea was fantastic. The best room in the resort we say.... We booked only for air and flight and had a full kitchen to cook and all the comforts of home. No, there were no meals provided but, use your sense of adventure, we did. The staff were very friendly and courteous and Betty the bartender is a real gem. The people were so kind and helped us with everything we needed and
service was excellent at this resort. Everything was planned out for us and we did not have to worry about travel or checking
for certain places to rent an adventure or even a golf cart. All
you had to do was ask. We are recommending to our friends and family that this is indeed a great place for a holiday!
