We went to Roatan for our honeymoon and were delighted to have stayed the first 3 nights at Barefoot Cay! It was fabulous! They didn't have any rooms for the last 3 nights of our honeymoon, so we went to Baan Suerte, near West End. The staff at Barefoot Cay was kind enough to give us a ride over to Baan Suerte but when we arrived, no one was there to greet us. After a couple of minutes, a dirty, smelly dog came walking over and started licking my leg. And after about 10 minutes, a couple of men showed up, grabbed our bags and took them to our room, without saying a word. Not a very good greeting for $150 a night. Then the manager came out and took us on a tour of the property. The "private beach access" is down a slippery, steep rock path. The pool was cloudy water with many leaves and dirt in it. The lounge chairs around the pool were tattered, dirty and many were broken. The wood louvres in the room were broken. The kitchenette looked like it was built in 1970. The shower stall required shoes and there were no toiletries, just an opened (looked slightly used) bar of soap. The "king" bed was 2 twins pushed together and the bed skirt had about 3 inches of dirt around the base...clearly not washed in a while. Although the windows had mesh screens, there were numerous mosquitoes flying around the room. I'm not normally too picky...but again...$150 a night on an island like Roatan should get you a pretty nice room. Lastly, upon asking the manager who we should contact if we should need anything, she said she "left at 4pm for the day and we could ask the night guard, but he doesn't speak very good english." How's that for $150/night customer service!?! We immediately left and went back to Barefoot Cay. It is uncomparable!!
