“Good Hotel, Awful Manager And Staff!”

Ameg Lodge Kilimanjaro Ltd.

Feb 28, 2008

This hotel is, in terms of facilities at least, one of the best in Moshi. However my visit here was ruined by poor staff, and possibly the worst management I have ever encountered in Tanzania (and I've encountered some pretty bad management...).
The problems started with the price of the room: I had agreed a discounted price over the phone shortly before I arrived, but at reception the staff denied all knowledge and insisted I paid the inflated standard room rate. I gave in after 20 mins of fruitless argument and went to my room, which was clean and of a good standard.

At dinner my friend ordered a margerhita pizza but when it arrived it turned out to be a hawaiian, the same as mine. We pointed this out to the waitress and she didn't seem to understand (which is unusual in a tourist hotel in TZ, as most waiting staff can speak good english). She then dissapeared off to the kitchen, we presumed to check the order, but after 5 mins she had not returned and our food was going cold so we both ate our pizza. At the end of the meal when the bill was presented and we had been billed for two of the more expensive Hawaiian pizzas. I pointed out that we hadn't ordered two and therefore I thought it only reasonable that we charged for what we ordered, as we had tried to correct things when the food was broughtt to our table. The waitress was clearly struggling to understand what we were ssaying and our Kiswahili was too poor to make communication any easier. We asked for the manager and after about 5 mins the surliest manager in the whole of Africa (or at least so it seemed) flounced over to our table and asked what the problem was. It is hard to describe just how rude the manager was, but suffice to say her attitude would have maded Basil Fawlty blush. She accused us of trying to cheat the waitress and eventually agreed to correct the bill on the condition that we leave the restaurant!
The next morning I checked out and the manager was on reception. I told her that I though her attitude and that of her staff was poor and that I would not be staying at the AMEG again. Her response? "good."

What can I say? If you enjoy being cheated by staff and insulted by the management then stay here. Otherwise go somewhere that values your custom.

“Excellent Base for Kilimanjaro”

Ameg Lodge Kilimanjaro Ltd.

Surrey, UK

We completed our Kilimanjaro trek last year and stayed a Ameg for 2 day before and 2 day after the trek.

It is a secure site with 24 hour security and set in its own walled compound.

Ameg has the most beautiful gardens and a great pool and gym - the gym is really well equipped although after the trek we never wanted to see a gym again!

We stayed in room 4 with had an amazing view of the mountain and as it was in the corner of the compound it was very quiet and peaceful.

The room was clean and spacious with mossie netting on all the windows as well as shutter windows - even with all this Tanzanian mozzies are persistant buggers and still got us!

The room had its own shower and bathroom, seperate dressing type area as well a TV that has all the usual Eurosport, News 24 and CNN channels.

Ameg has its own bar and resturant where it is fair to say the service is slow but after a few days in Tanzania you will discover the whole country is like this! Everything bacame known in 'Tanzania Time' ie about 20 minutes later! The food is good if not a little samey and the beer to drink is Kilimanjaro beer - great stuff!

Unlike most other people we had no problems with the staff - we found them all tto be polite, courteous and nice people. They are very proud of their country and will suggest placs to visit as soon as you ask!

We also trekked with Ashanti tours and they are amazing - they saw a group of 22 of us up there and back in one piece.

Have a great time and do stay at the Ameg but keep in mind this is a basic hotel - not a 5 star resort!

If you like service and a friendly attitude this place is NOT for you. The grounds are well kept and the room was fine but the attitude from the staff was horrible!! For starters they gave me one price over the phone then changed it when I got there, then only wanted US cash but wouldn't take $100 bills then when I got small US bills they wouldn't take certain years the bills were printed then they offered to have me pay in shillings but gave me a conversion rate that was 20% higher than the rate in US dollars. SHADY!! I unfortunately stayed there for two nights. There was no one else anywhere around and my girlfriend and I went to the pool and suddenly the front desk person came out and told us she had to get out of the pool or pay $7 because her feet were dangling in the water. My issue was not the $7 but the harsh, disrespectful tone which she spoke. We were both floored. Seriously, she was yelling at us because I did not put her name down on the room even though we were standing next to one another when I checked in. DON'T STAY HERE!!! If the staff is anything indication of the ownership then they don't deserve a dime from anyone. And, by the way, I've never written a review of a placed I've stayed but I am compelled to make sure no one stays here. HORRIBLE, HORRIBLE, HORRIBLE!!!! I'd rather stay at the bare bones YMCA over staying here again.

“Take my advice- DO NOT GO THERE”

Ameg Lodge Kilimanjaro Ltd.

The location and view is fantastic, its done very well. But that's as far as it goes. The service is horrible, the staff and director extremely rude. Certainly not what you would expect if you pay $110 per night.
You get the same breakfast everyday, with local margarine, butter is out of question. If you ask for eggs done some other way, you are refused even if you are ready to pay for that. The so called reception closes at 10:30pm, so there is no one in the hotel except the guests and the guards at the front gate.
When we arrived after a late flight at 10:30 pm, we were given keys in hand at the gate and we literally had to ask them to show us our way to the rooms. There was no place where one could fill the forms and pay. While clearing the bills the last day.. we whad to wait for 20 mins to get change of $38 and did not get it thus had to pay in Tanzanian Shillings. So either way, they acted up to refund in TShs as it would be a loss for them considering their exorbitant exchange rate. We were accused of breaking a wrought iron stool which was a useless pice of work of some welder. We were literally locked up inside the compound and demanded to pay some extra $$ before we could be released. All this while we had a flight to catch and we had already been delayed at the reception. Seriously, who can break a wrought iron stool?
When we called the director, she had the nerve to shout and scream at us by saying we delayed our payments, we should have paid the first night we arrived while as mentioned the reception was already closed by then. Not to forget we were told internet was free in the rooms if we come with our own laptop but we were never provided with the access despite reminding all the time at the reception.
We then went into town where we heard more stories about similar adventures other people have had here.
We would not recommend it at any cost, better go to other hotels please.

I climed KILI early 2007 and we stayed at AMEG lodge for two nights. It has a nice setting, the rooms are very basic and need some improvement. It was loud at night, there was no hot water because the heater was turned off by the guards during the day to save electricity. Power went off several times and the staff was not allowed to turn on the generator. There was no change at reception and to use the internet you pay 3 times what other places charge in town. I would not recommend this place for groups. There are certainly other places where you get more for your money.
