We booked into this hotel as we wanted a base to explore the areas around tunis, we just wanted a place to sleep. Got a taxi from Tunis Airport for 20TD per taxi.(£8) cheap as it was 40KM from Tunis Cathage Airport. We had booked this hotel for 4 nights with Youtravel.com and paid £5.50 per room iper night inc breakfast. Needless to say, we were not expecting much. The only thing that we needed was aircon and this hotel's details showed that all rooms had aircon.
My advice is to buy lots of bottled water en-route and also fruit. The taxi driver will stop for a few minutes if requested. Watermelon 10KG £1 ! Bought supplies drinks, water, crisps etc and headed to the hotel. The drive from main road to hotel 5KM was thru a non-populated region. Arrived at hotel gate and to the reception. First impression= better than expected. Had to wait an hour for our room but were offered a call drink which was nice. Our baggage was taken to our rooms after being given a remote control for our aircon (£8 refundable). The room once the aircon took effect was nice..it was 40 deg C outside. Had a shower, the water pressure was great! All in all, this place was much better than expected. A knowledge of french/arabic will be very useful in this hotel.
The balcony on the first floor room had great seaviws. The sunset and sea made this hotel very attractive. The beaches around were the best in Tunisia in my opinion. The area on the whole is very underdeveloped. Those who like promenades and activity must not book this hotel. Those who love the sea and nature, and long beachwalks will love the place!
The evening buffet meal (exc alcoholic drinks) inc soft drinks cost our family £25 but was OK. I would have a meal like this to "survive"..a better option is to eat at poolside bar, pizzas , fish,grilled/fried ,grilled meat etc for the same price. Please do not waste time with their buffet!
Next morning, a bit of home-work. Learnt that the best way to get to Tunis was in a "LUAGE" which is a shared taxi with a capacity of 8 people. We took a taxi from Hotel to a nearby town of SOLIMAN (pronounced SLIMAN) for 10TD (£4 and 5KM) . THe luage cost 1.7 TD or 85P per person or 13TD to hire the whole minibus. I paid for 8 seats but occupied 5 for the exclusive hire of this vehicle . For under £6 for a 30KM ride to Tunis meant £4 for taxi ride was a rip off. In all fairness , taxi driver charged both ways due to the place being in an isolated area!
Got to Tunis Luage Station known as Bab Aroua. Thre is also a train/metro station nearby. I advice a short walk of around 1.5KM to Avenue De France (locally known as AVENUE) or taxi for £1 or 2.5TD. AVE DE FRANCE IS IN A LOVELY AREA AND FEELS LIKE YOU IN PARIS..SIMILAR TO CHAMPS ELLYSEE BUT CHEAP!I could go on and on..but I am not writing a book !
Hotel essentials: Helpful to bring own food. Lots of flies and mosquitos at night, DO NOT COME WITHOUT INSECT REPELLENTS PLEASE. SPEND AN EXTRA £10 ON A FEW TYPES OF GADGETS AS ITS ABSOLUTELY ESSENTIAL ! DO NOT TAKE THIS ADVICE LIGHTLY.
Hope this helps fellow travellers. I did not find any info on Slymar hotel on tripadvisor and hope this helps those who are planning to travel to this region.
