Went April 2007 with significant other, 21 years old!
If you're looking for an easy going, gorgeous resort this is the place for you. Lamai beach is a very nice quiet beach, but that never stopped us from having a good time.
There are random "bars" that come out of no where (like most places in Thailand) right on the beach so there's always somewhere to go, and so many resorts are side by side along the beach so there's always somewhere different to eat, and always affordable, I mean it is Thailand.
The resort itself is very small, but very nice. We were welcomed with such great service walking in and our bags were pealed off of us faster than we could get out of the van. We entered the reception and were instantly given cold towels and juice! They got all of our information and were told our room was ready. Our bags were taken (we tipped i think 200 baht) and the guy carried them up to the third floor upstairs in a very nice open clean building. We stayed in a small room, but it was gorgeous and comfortable with a/c (which is necessary when its so hot to take a break), king bed, plenty of storage for luggage and just all around pretty. The beach was down the way past the small pool (which we only went to at night and we didn't swim in it, the beach was far too nice) and past the villas (which looked really nice) down to the restaurant (totally open to the beach), which turned into an extention to the restaurant right on the beach, which was really good. The food at the restaurant is a little pricey so we usually walked down the beach or went to the road to find something a little cheaper, there are great little places down the road. We went to one beach restaurant which had fresh caught fish you could choose, that was great, the servers were really entertaining.
On the beach itself you could get a message for like 100baht (like $3.50) and they hurt you bad, but you feel wonderful after, I wanted to take them home with me. Careful for Mama on the beach, she made me feel bad so I got ripped off for a pedicure, but ripped off in thailand is still ridiculously cheap.
The resort is just very nice, there was nothing negative I can think of, unless you want more of a party, but then I would go to the neighbour island, Koh Phangan, it's much younger.
On a side note, I never once felt unsafe. I was out walking on my own a couple nights and it was just such a really great neighbourhood. There is internet nearby, laundry service across the road, and tons of shops with unique things that you don't find in Bangkok. There is a travel guy across the road to book everything for you, and the front desk will get you a shuttle to wherever you need to go! All in all great service, great accommodations, gorgeous beach, always clean, everyone was friendly, all around perfect vacation destination in my eyes.
