After staying in a lower budget hotel, I splurged and moved to Sofitel Plaza Hanoi for my last 3 nights. It was worth the extra $$. My room which was upgraded was amazing. And I had a delightful view of West Lake.
The service at the hotel is exceptional. The hotel is a little off the "beaten path." This may explain why it was the lowest price high end hotel in Hanoi. This wasn't a problem with honest taxis always on site.
The restaurants in the hotel are worth the trip to the hotel. The food is inexpensive compared to other hotel amenities. Ming Palace has an all you can eat Dim Sum which was delightful. The same restaurant serves amazing Vietnamese and Cantonese food. Having a sensitive tummy, I sadly skipped the highly touted street food. So, I can wholeheartedly recommend the PHO at Ming Palace. The breakfast buffet which was included in my room rate was amazing. There was an unbelievable array of Asian, European and American breakfast foods.
The hotel has a very knowledgeable concierge staff and also has an Exotissimo tour desk in the lobby. When they realized I was travelling alone, it felt like I had 6 big brothers and sisters looking after me. It was very sweet. In fact, the tiny little gal at the front of the hotel really let a taxi driver have it when he tried to over charge me for fare.
While it is not unheard of for taxi drivers in any country to rip off tourists, my experience in Viet Nam was that this is the rule and not the exception. You can trust any of the taxis that the hotel directs you to.
