I was disappointed to see that the Sheraton Hanoi Hotel is located about 10 minutes north of the city downtown and the edge of West Lake. The hotel appears to be dated and "tired". It's more 80/90's Vietnamese-esque styling, then shiny and new nor colonial. The rooms were nothing special, but the bathroom has a separate shower and tub. There is an in-room safe and ironing board. I was on a Starwood Preferred Guest floor as a Gold member, so I'm guessing the amenities may be a bit better than the standard floors. Fruit basket was filled everyday along with complimentary bottles of water, coffee/tee, etc. Gym is decent sized and doubles as a membership gym as well. The main hotel dining restaurant is in the lobby and VERY NOISY. The menu is almost always buffett-style and the menu has almost no Vietnamese items. For Vietnamese food in the hotel, you'll cross the courtyard to the Hemispheres restaurant where it's quiet and the service is much better without much higher prices. The staff there was superb and they even altered the dishes I ordered to my liking. The busines center was okay and when I experienced a problem with a computer there, the attendant refused to charge me for the service. Oh yeah, I was there on my birthday and they hotel delivered a small and delicious birthday cake to my room. Wow! That's what I call making me feel like I belong!
There is a tennis court with attendant and the pool is okay. The West Lake area has its merits as being quieter than downtown and it's where a lot of foreigners reside. Right outside the main gate of the hotel, you'll find a few small grocers selling foreign products (e.g. wine from around the world, cheese, marmalite, chocolates, cookies/biscuits, etc). However, there is absolutely nothing else to walk to nor would you want to walk in this area because of the dust.
If you want to be in this location, then my recommendation is the brand new InterContinental hotel right next door. It's amazing and built right on to the lake.
