“ok but better for less elsewhere”

Que Huong Liberty 4 Hotel

Mar 1, 2008

We stayed for a last night in Vietnam at the Liberty 4 and we were both disappointed. We paid $80 for our room but stayed in better accommodation nearby for $35 earlier in the week. The staff gave us no information on our arrival so didn't know much about the facilities on offer or even where the restaurant was! The breakfast was probably one of the worst we've had, the worst was at Vietnam Village in Hoi An. If you're new to Vietnam then this is in an okay location but I'd recommend looking around first.

“Nice Hotel in the backpacker district”

Que Huong Liberty 4 Hotel

Jan 8, 2008

My boyfriend and I stayed at this hotel over Christmas and found it to be adequate. The lobby was small but pleasant. We were given a non-smoking (I truly appreciate this) room on the 4th floor. The size was good although it did not have a view which really did not matter to us. I purposely asked for a room in the back so as to be away from the Saigon street noise as much as possible. Although in Saigon you’re never really away from the noise but, having a room in the back of the hotel helped muffle it somewhat. One plus I appreciated was an in-room safe. The A/C was cold and worked beautifully (very important after walking the streets for several hours). The bed was the usual rock hard Asian bed. The bathroom was clean, came with the usual amenities you’d expect from a three star hotel (hot & cold shower, clean towels. etc.) and had good water pressure. The staff was reasonably friendly and helpful though they could probably use more training in English.

The breakfast included in the room rate was ok. The selections are so so. A few Western (not enough types of cereal and wheat bread but then again, I’m picky with my morning fiber) and some Asian dishes. The city view on the rooftop restaurant was great though. It was nice to sit outside but make sure to get there early as these are preferred seats. There were times when we already put our cups on the table and some people were still jockeying their way in, repeatedly (if not downright insistently rude) asking if the seats were taken when clearly they already were.

One thing I found a little weird and disconcerting was the insistence on keeping our passports with the front desk. We are US citizens and it was perfectly understandable the need to check it to ascertain that we have the proper visas but keeping it? And when I asked for our passports back the night before we were checking out, one lady staff behind the front desk was very reluctant to hand it over and insisted on keeping it until checkout time. When I insisted on it, and after much talking amongst themselves in Vietnamese, she grudgingly gave it back to me and made me sign for it. I thought this may be a Vietnam government requirement but we stayed at another hotel soon after and they did not ask to keep our passports. Go figure!

Overall, this hotel is a good value for the money and I recommend it to those looking for a good compromise between price and comfort.

“Can't fault it but look elsewhere”

I can't really fault this hotel. It was in an excellent location, friendly staff and clean. The only thing would be the price. We also stayed at the Elios Hotel which is more or less next door. It is a newer hotel (with free internet access unlike the Liberty 4) and is 2/3 of the price. In short the Liberty 4 is a good hotel but you can get slightly better for less money in the same area.

“a-ok”

a bit pricey (by viet standards) but the staff are friendly. very good location-- in the backpacker's area but not right smack in the middle of it so it's not too crowded and busy. walking distance to a lot of good shops like Sapa (my fave vietnamese store, perfect for girlies) and benh tanh market.

rooms are clean and spacious. food is average. we were there from March to early April, there weren't too many guests at the time so we sort of had the hotel all by ourselves.

guests are mostly caucasians(as in anywhere else in Vietnam)...there weren't too many asians checked in when we were there so we kind of felt odd being well, odd haha.

“Overpriced”

Let me start by saying this: by western standards, 65 bucks a night really isn't bad... I've stayed in much worse back in the UK and it has cost me more. But in Saigon? I expect a lot more bang for my buck.
I booked this place from the UK before I realized how cheap accomodation was in Ho Chi Minh city, and after 4 days there, when I told my fellow travellers what I was paying they nearly laughed me out of the country.
It's very clean and well maintained, although the rooms, especially the bathrooms could do with a little updating. Not exactly dirty, but a little tired. The staff were courteous and helpful and I made a penfriend of a very helpful Vietnamese waiter.
The restaraunt is ok, the food at night is good but the breakfasts could do with a lot more variety. The view from the rooftop restaraunt is stunning allowing you to take in a beautiful panarama of the city below and the park.
The rooms have AC, TV and a safe and mine was very spacious and comfortable. All in all, it was like a travelodge experience but with better staff; safe, comfie, no frills.
So whats the problem? Well none really, only that you can get the same standard of service, cleanliness and comfort for 10 dollars if you look around a bit. And you don't have to look that hard, mini hotels are 10 a penny in the Pham Ngu Lao area, and the Liberty 4 just doesn't justify the 65 dollar price tag. Not great value.
