“Agressive hotel manager and messed up reservations”

Uyan Hotel

Having recently got married in Istanbul Uyan hotel was one of the few that I recommended our guest arriving from the UK to stay in. From the moment we arrived the problems started, with one of our guests being put into a shoe boxed size single room instead of the twin room he had reserved, much to the discomfort of the other person who he was sharing with (who had to sleep on a camp bed). At first we thought it was just a simple mistake, and we didn't make a fuss. These things happen...

The next day more guests arrived with another couple being told rather rudely that the email confirmation they had from the hotel with the dates clearly printed meant nothing and they no longer had any rooms. Much to the dismay of the couple who had travelled over 6 hours to get there!

The day after, more troubles again. This time a single female guest who had double checked the room booking after she heard about the first incident ,was told by the hotel that her booking was absolutley fine. She was reassured that there would be no issue on her arrival. Well guess what...there was an issue, in fact they asked if she could share a single room (yes with another camp bed!) with one of the other guests who she didn't know!!!! Then when she said no, she just wanted the room she was promised, they bought the agressive hotel manager out. Who was so agressive and volatile that he almost lashed out at his potential and existing guests who were only trying to help. Actually the poor lady behind the booking desk was lovely but her manager spent the whole time screaming at her and his paying guests, for HIS mistake!!!!

This really is a terrible place and I haven't experienced anything like it before, but please don't let this put you off other hotels in the area. Our other guests stayed in a number of others in Sultanahmet and they are among the best hotels I have ever experienced (I have written reviews for these). Turkish hospitality is second to none, unfortunately Uyan and in particular its hotel manager has none of it!

“Superb Uyan”

We (self and wife) just stayed here for a week over Easter 2007. I would recommend this hotel to anyone. Our room had a great view of the Blue Mosque and a balcony overlooking the street (and Blue Mosque), yet although the hotel is just a few minutes' walk from many of the main attractions, it is in a very quiet and peaceful area. The staff are helpful, and if their English wasn't up to answering my questions they immediately called someone who could help. We visited the Seven Hills next door (owned by the chap who also owns the neighbouring En La Luna restaurant - great bloke) and it does seem that the Seven Hills is even better, but nevertheless we have no complaints at all about the Uyan.

“Great Location”

I have just returned from a short break to Istanbul and was delighted with the hotel we chose. Hotel Uyan is situated in the old historical district of Istanbul (Sultanahmet) ,very close to the Blue Mosque and Haghia Sophia. The name means 'Wake Up' probably because of the calls of the Iman at dawn! It is located in a quiet street with several bars and restaurants nearby. I can recommend the fish restaurant next door with its conservatory like dining room on the roof top with its spectacular views of the 2 Mosques lit up at night. Another 'must' is cocktails at The Four Seasons Hotel at the end of the street which was the former prison featured in 'Midnight Express'. Expensive but well worth it. Location is one of the major selling points of this hotel with the closeness of the Hippodrome, Basillica Cistern (another must), The Grand Bazaar (don't be enticed by well-dressed guides)Topkapi Palace and The Spice Market.

Our room was large and comfortable having emailed in advance requesting a non-smoking room. It was well furnished with a comfortable bed. The staff were very welcoming and helpful, efficintly booking various restaurants and excursions. The breakfast on the roof top was continental style but with good choice and eggs were available to order. All in all a good experience at a very reasonable price.

The hotel rooms etc. are exactly as they appear on the hotel web site. You get exactly what you see, and this is good.
The hotel is very central, right in the tourist area and so is noisy early in the morning during "call to prayer" - two mosques very close by - this however will be the case with all hotels in this area. I would thoroughly recommend this hotel, cant think of any downside.

We have just returned from a weekend at Uyan Hotel in Istnbul.
Istanbul is a magic place to go around see freely.

The hotel is adjacent to the historical places, and has a wonderful view to Aya Sofia and Blue mosque (you can see the photo attached). The deluxe rooms are ok, big, confortable and with old charm. Maybe the normal rooms aren't too big.

I would say this is a very good hotel that I'd like to advis you.
