Obviously, a hotel is rated based on its ability to stand up to the expectations. I would consider this a descent 3-star hotel given the amenities, but if rated against the expectation as a luxury 5-star hotel, it fails miserably. The service from the staff was quite good, but the hotel itself was a huge letdown.
The selection of food is good, but if you plan to eat in the public dining rooms of the adjacent Palace, you may face "feeding stampedes". If you wish a quiet atmosphere, the French restaurant in the Vitalis is very good.
The spa is nice, but as some have said, broken tiles and dirty grout is quite common. I was very put off by the dirt and lack of maintenance.
The rooms...horrible. I'd previously stayed at the Herod's Forum and Palace hotels, and expected the Vitalis to be a step above. I reserved a suite for an anniversary celebration. The staff did a great job of preparing it according to some special requests I'd made, but they could do nothing to prevent my huge disappointment.
First of all, the carpets are worn and dirty. Second, the furniture is the same cheap pastel-painted thin wood used for the Forum and Palace. No additional comforts or investment in decor. The wood is so cheap, I was in constant fear the closet or dresser would fall appart.
The living room of the suite was the worst I'd ever seen. I was ashamed to have paid for it. The furniture was so sparse, the room felt more like an empty storage room than a living room. The coffee table was VERY old, very cheap and heavily scratched across every inch of the surface from long-time wear. The couch was ancient, and was something I'd probably have thrown away long ago. The couch was also so far from the tiny 20" TV, I wanted to call down and ask for binoculars.
The hallways are not much better, with the tiles used for the floor numbers chipped up, and the carpets equally worn.
When I checked out, I not only filled out the guest form, but conveyed my disappointment verbally and asked them to forward it to the manager. I would have expected a call to apologize. Nothing. After many months, I turned to Starwood to complain that they horribly failed to live up to the "Luxury Edition" banner.
Starwood informed me that the hotel had apparently been dropped. Good for Starwood!
If you pay 3-star rates and come with those expectations, go for it. Otherwise, avoid this hotel.
