We had been told it was the nicest hotel in Haifa, but my family and I were very surprised at how very worn out the whole hotel was. chipped paint, stained carpets, faded everything, and very very dated design. A bench seat in the bar had lost all it's padding and I sat down directly on the edge of a two-by-four!
posters in the halls show a couple enjoying the amenities in the hotel... circa 1985 (she's wearing a bustier to dinner, he's in a Miami Vice style jacket at breakfast)
My sister compared the place, unfavorably, to a best western she'd recently stayed at. We had just come from the American Colony Hotel in Jerusalem (which was AMAZING) and later continued on to the Dan Tel Aviv (lovely). In our rooms at the Dan Tel Aviv, we found copies of a special edition of Ha'Aretz for guests of the Dan hotels. The first "article" in the magazine was a 2-page spread talking about how the Dan Carmel had just finished being renovated and how it was now a 5-star hotel and one of the best in the middle east - HA!!!
Bottom line: not a horrible hotel, but not even close to worth the price.
