“Small with a personal touch”

Hotel de la Mer

3 of 5 stars
Maryland
May 30, 2008

My husband and I stayed at this hotel for 4 nights, then re-checked in for a 5th night at the end of our trip.

This is a boutique hotel, so it is small, and by far the smallest boutique hotel I've stayed in. I think we might have stayed in the smallest room they have. There was barely any place to put our suitcases without tripping over them. I also would have preferred a carpeted floor in our room (nicer on the feet).

The bathroom and shower were tiny. It was a stand-in shower with no place to put your shampoo bottles, razor, etc. The shower had nice water pressure. Accommodations are very basic; no amenities such as shampoo, conditioner, hair dryer, etc. But I brought my own so it wasn't a big deal. The bath towels were very thin.

The lobby elevator is tiny as well -- fits one person and one bag. There is a spa at the hotel but it did not look like much. It was a small room with 2 massage rooms. I did not use the spa so I can't comment on what that was like, but you had to walk through it to get to the outside deck with a view of the city and the beach.

When we re-checked in for our last night, we were given the same room, so we did not get to see what any of the other rooms were like. Unfortunately, this time our room had a bad smell. Despite the fact that the entire hotel was non-smoking, it smelled like someone had been smoking in it. Opening the windows to air it out did not help. We asked to be moved but they said they did not have any other available rooms. We ended up asking for some air freshener, which helped. But it was not a very pleasant last night.

OK, now for the positives:

-The front desk staff is AWESOME. Very kind and willing to help with anything you need. I felt that they really got to know their guests. They gave us some good restaurant recommendations in the area. Also, the hotel does not have answering machines in the rooms, so if someone calls for you, they have to leave a message with the front desk staff. I found this odd, but kind of a nice homey touch. The staff was good about taking and giving the messages.

- The breakfast was fantastic!! The selection wasn't huge, but the food was delicious. I liked it better than all of the breakfasts at the larger hotels we stayed in.

- Great location!! Close to the beach and many restaurants are nearby as well.

- They had self-serve water, coffee and tea 'round the clock. There was a fabulous selection of loose teas,as well as tea bags. We enjoyed a nice cup of tea every evening.

Overall, it was a nice stay but I would ask for a different room next time.

“recommendable”

Hotel de la Mer

May 24, 2008

We like this hotel much better than the unpersonal standard 5* Tel Aviv hotels and on our recommendation also our friends adopted it as their TA hotel. The staff is very friendly, the room is very nice (please dust the cables behind the TV, they were very dirty) and shower OK (the shower stream should be stronger), we had a nice balcony , breakfast was nice (2 days we were there, was exactly the same, some small changes would be nice) and the waitress very charming.

“Best in Tel Aviv”

Hotel de la Mer

May 21, 2008

I join the many other complimentary remarks made about this hotel.
I was there for 10 days in late April and I can say, without hesitation, it is the best hotel in Tel Aviv I have ever stayed in - and I've stayed in quite a few over the years.
In fact I enjoyed the experience so much that when I was checking out I immediately made another booking for this September, a request graciouly accepted by the friendly front counter staff who even offered me a slight discount. Now that's what I call service!
On my arrivgal 10 days previously I had been welcomed by the friendly Michel on the front desk who rang my room a few minutes later to see if everything was all right. It was.
As other reviewers have said, the hotel couldn't be better located, so close as it is to the beach, the restaurants and the local night spots, such as The Pub on Allenby Street, an English-style establishment owned by Scott who once ran a bar by the same name at the corner of Haryarkon Street, not far from the Hotel De La Mer.
The breakfasts were wholesome and varied, although perhaps the fruit juice pitchers could have been filled up a bit more regularly, but that's a very minor criticism.
My room on the first floor had a a sea view and was spacious enough for a single traveller with all the facilities one would expect.
As I say, I am back again in September and looking keenly forward to my return.

“Wonderful hospitality!”

We spent 15 lovely days in Tel Aviv and this hotel became our "home away from home". It is well situated in Tel Aviv and walking distance to many places. It's very close to beaches, shopping, and many nice restaurants. The staff is most cordial and helpful. They were responsive to every request we made and provided us with many helpful tips and suggestions. Each and everyone made us feel most welcome - front desk personnel, housekeepers, and breakfast room attendants. In fact we skipped breakfast one morning and the next day the waitress inquired as to where we had been. Not something you're likely to encounter in a large scale hotel!

The breakfast was always fresh and plentiful and there were nice options for eating in both the breakfast room or outside.
A large tea selection was available round the clock and often there were tasty sweets available too.

The rooms are comfortable and it was nice being welcomed with a basket of fresh fruit and a bottle of wine. What a nice touch!

There is a very nice large terrace on the 3rd floor which overlooks the Mediterranean. It is a very inviting place to relax and unwind.

We definitely would recommend this to those who don't need all the glamour and glitz of a large chain hotel. For a "haimische" (homey) atmosphere this certainly fits the bill.

We plan to return again in December.

“Nice hotel in convenient location.”

Hotel de la Mer

I trust so much trip advisor, that I never look any further.

When I arrived in Tel Aviv, I was driving trying to find the property and went about three times around the area without luck. I was a little worried I might have made a mistake since some of the properties didn't look that nice.... but when I finally found it, all my worries disappeared!

The reception was very good, but don't expect bell service or anything like that. There are a few stairs and if you have heavy suitcases (like I did) it can be a hassle. There is an elevator inside, so no worries there.

I can't say I explored the hotel, so I don't know if they had a restaurant or a snack bar. I went out to find a place to eat.

I had reserved a suite and it was beautiful. I liked the decoration a lot. It wasn't huge, but it was big enough.

In front of the hotel there is a parking lot, and if you have a car that is very convenient.

Even though the hotel is kind of hidden, it's very close to major streets to get public transportation.

If you are looking for a simple hotel, but with a nice touch, this is it. You won't be disappointed.
