My wife and I had been in Egypt and Israe for our honeymoon, so for our 20th we wen't to th other side of the Dead Sea. We had a lovely time at the Four Seasons Amman and took a package that got us day trips to Petra and the Dead Sea.
Amman is a really interesting city, but the things within striking distance are amazing. You have already read enough about Petra, if you like the idea please make the trip! Only 1 hour north of Amman is Jerash. It is not quite the same as Pompeii because it was never fully buried, but the Roman ruins cover at least 2 kilometres in length with more being excavated. It is said to be the best preserved Middle-Eastern Roman era ruin.
The Dead Sea is pretty amusing - the buckets of mud provided are free so you can happily try some.
Mt Nebus is where Moses is said to have been shown the promised land and also legend has it that he is buried there. The panorama from the Jordanian side is splendid, and it is higher than the Israeli side so a bit more dramatic.
The Four Seasons has a lovely breakfast buffet, an OK dinner buffet and some good value local food options for in-room dining. They didn't put out picnic on the Petra day in heatproof boxes which was a runny smelly mistake! The package was new and I don't think they had thought that one through yet.
All the staff / drivers (Mahmoud was very reliable) / waiters were friendly and efficient. The hotel is a 15 minute taxi from downtown and with rooftops rather than spectacular views. We had a lovely time.
