“The Worst Experience!”

Om Kolthoom Hotel & Tower

Feb 20, 2008

I have just come back from a week in Egypt. I stayed in Om Kolthoom for 1 night whilst in Cairo. When we initially checked in, the staff said he did not have 2 rooms available together so gave us in two different floors but promised we would have them by evening. We went to ask them again and he said there were none available. We told him about him promising us and the manager on duty was very rude and did not respond to us. Another tourist who was checking in then commented 'This is Egypt, no-one will keep their promise!' so we just din't bother any further.

The room was okay, but the bathroom was appaling. There was blood stains in the shower curtain and it was very unhygenic. All the while i was just glad we were staying there for a night!!!

When we checked in a porter came to drop off our bags and when we gave him LE5 as tip he asked for more. So, not knowing what is normal, we gave him LE10, and then he went to drop off the bags to the second room and asked for tip again. Whilst checking out, i made sure i din't give him any tip at all.

Our tour guide also mentioned that he was shocked we were actually staying in such a hotel. The area that is located in is not convenient, and far from the pyramids. The part of the Nile that you can see is absolutely polluted and not a pleasant sight.

I would not recommend anyone going to stay at this hotel.

The staff are very rude, and the hotel is just a nightmare to stay in!

“Om Kolthoom Hotel - only if you're on strict budget!”

Om Kolthoom Hotel & Tower

Feb 10, 2008

Om Kolthoom could be considered as an appropriate option only if you (like we were during our trip to Cairo) want to save money, making the journey without needless splurge. The problem with Cairo accommodation is that between $85/night (what we paid) and ~$180/night (next available option which is Hilton & Marriott) there is no hotels at all if you want to be located in central area of Cairo and not in suburbs.
Om Kolthoom hotel (occupies 14-16th floors of some ugly `80s tower) is barely acceptable - it's shabby, not very clean (no wander to discover previous lodgers` hair or rubbish everywhere); but room is large, views from balcony spectacular, water pressure is good & breakfast edible while table-cloths are spotty & coffee really bad. Staff's friendly but if you order anything from the hotel cafeteria of the ground floor - expect to wait 1 hour at least.
Location is good as Zamalek island is comparatively quiet or better say not so noisy & traffic-crazy as other Cairo central areas, but to walk from the hotel to Egyptian Museum for instance takes 50-60min, so you need to catch a mad taxi every time.
So please judge for yourself before booking this hotel.

“An excellent hotel with amazing staff”

Om Kolthoom Hotel & Tower

An excellent hotel in an ideal location. Although the rooms were basic, the service of the staff was easily 5*. At one stage my wife required some medicine for a mosquito bite, on enquiring in the lobby, the duty manager contacted a chemists, arrranged delivery and within ten minutes I had the medicine, all for a total cost of 60p! I would recommend this hotel anytime

This hotel is very basic, I dont mean its not clean or comfortabe, to the contrary rooms have amazing amazing views of the nileand were very lush.. huge room big bed, marble bathroom.. serious 5* luxury. However, the hotel has not facilities, no pool and the restaurant is AWFUL so dont ever order the room service!
locations great in zamalek so pretty easy to get to everwhere, as its central and where most upper class egyptians live.
So if you are looking for great rooms to stay in choose this hotel but dont expect much more!!
