“Shabby, dreary, unhelpful staff - avoid the New Cataract Hotel”

New Cataract Hotel

Spent two nights at the New Cataract Hotel, and did not enjoy the experience. It had the overall ambience of a Soviet era apartment block.

My room was shabby, with stains on the carpet, mismatched curtains, chipped french polish on the cabinetry. I think the room decor has not been updated since about 1972! However, the bathroom has had a make-over and was reasonably presentable. My window and balcony had a "town view", ie a slum, rather than a Nile view.

The door of the mini bar fridge fell off when I opened it. When I complained, the staff were prompt to organise a replacement, but it should not have happened in the first place.

The reception staff were not particularly helpful, and the bistro staff were positively unco-operative. The food was quite good, but the service was slow and sullen.

I would not choose to revisit the New Cataract Hotel even if it were free of charge. Such a shame, because Aswan is a charming small city and we had a great time touring around there.

“Almost a bad ending to a great trip”

New Cataract Hotel

This was the last hotel at the end of trip, we found the staff very rude and unhelpfull, was pretty much ignored in the resturant, and when something was ordered, we were waiting for about 2 hours to get it.
On the last night, we used to room service, food arrived about an hour later, but completely different to what we ordered, we told them this, and they bought us a different sauce for the steak, by this time it was cold, but it already had some sauce on it. They said they would heat it up, I told them I didn't want it now, as it was about 2hours later, and we had an early morning. Just as I got into bed, they turn up with a fresh dish of what we wanted., but still charged us for an order we cancled. Would not stay there again.

“The view is worth everything else!”

We stayed at the New Cataract as part of a small tour group. I have stayed before at the Old Cataract but the view from our top floor veranda was worth the change! The place does need maintenance but the grounds and pool area shared with the Old Cataract made this a great place to relax from our sometimes hectic tour. The food was okay and the staff were very pleasant. Watching the feluccas on the Nile at sunset was definitely a high point!

“New Cataract Could Not Be More Wonderful”

New Cataract Hotel

After my first visit staying at the older hotel across the way, I decided on a budget I would pick something more cost effective subsequent visits. I opted for the additional monies to have a view of the island and what an excellent decision that was! The view was beyond description as those who have done it are aware and pictures do not even do justice.

The hotel room was spotless, the staff was equally beyond description, anything you might want or need was at a phone call away. I needed a doctor for a friend and called the front desk, once they realized it was not an emergency, a doctor knocked on the door in less than 15 minutes and was treated better than any situation I have seen in the U.S.

I would highly recommend this hotel to any one and always do, it is a far cry from the famous name hotels in Cairo or Luxor!

“We Stayed in the Best Hotel in Aswan”

New Cataract Hotel

Nov 6, 2007

We were so disappointed that the Elephantine Island Movenpick wasn't going to be completed and that we had to change to the New Cataract . As it turned out, we couldn't have been happier with the New Cataract hotel location and views and much preferred it to the Movenpick and Island Isis we saw as we travelled the river. Our room on the 4th floor overlooked the Nile, the town, Elephantine Island, the Old Cataract Hotel and the pool that is shared by both hotels. With the little balcony to sit on to watch the lights of the island, the town, Ali Khan monument and the nobles tomb and the boats going by- what more could you want. The rooms had been recently refurbished, the bathrooms and room were very clean, very comfortable. The hotel building itself is pretty ugly but with the views we had, who cares! The staff was very helpful, the meals were not exceptional but tasty. the pool and area was outstanding. I would highly recommend as a perfect choice. Again, hotel stars in Egypt do not compare to Europe.
