“Fantastic Holiday!”

Sheraton Luxor Resort

Jul 3, 2008

Just got back from staying at the Sheraton in Luxor and don't know where to start! Had a fantastic time! We stayed in a bungalow over looking the nile which was lovely! As mentioned in previous reviews - the main hotel in under renovation, however, this did not effect our stay in any way in some ways, it was better! Don't be fooled by the word renovation - I did not hear anything our entire holiday they were very discret. The place was lovely because it was so quiet. You could go to the pool whenever you wanted and not needing to put your towels down before going to breakfast (like you would normally find in most resorts) you could go to eat when you wanted because it was not busy! The restaurants on site are fantastic! Food is really good. Can be a bit pricey eating every night on site so try to venture out - there is seven days seven ways which is very reasonable and it was a pub on the top floor as well! there is also a place called Maxims which is also just as nice. As for the local traders, yes they pester you but you just need to be firm, make sure that you are setting a price that you want and if you start to walk away they will eventually go down to what you want! Dont buy o first instance - have a look around as well, we foun some really good deals in other hotels and it was nice to venture out and go to other hotels to eat!

I think that people's reviews have been unfair, they state that the Sheraton is a 5 star, however, you should be aware that a five star in England is different to a 5 star in Egypt! It was still very pleasant and clean. I think that the Sheraton just needs a lot of love. (which it is getting) I find that people have to high expectations and that is why there are so many bad reviews! My partner and I are very down to earth and think that if people just remembered that they were in Egypt then they would not be complaining! If you want pure luxury then do not go!

We done a 2 night cruise and a day trip to Cairo which was absolutly fantastic.

Venture out to the travel agents on the main street becasue they are cheaper than going through your rep!

Back to the Sheraton - Staff are very attentive, they go out of their way to make you happy, they guys at the pool are lovely, they lay your towels out you and make sure that you are shaded if thats what you want. Please remember that these guys in the hotel work very long, hard days so don't be short with them, they are just very laid back. Especially considering it was over 40 deg!

On arrival at the airport there will be someone trying to take your cases to the coach for you do not let them as it is not far to walk! if you are as disorganised as me then you will have no small notes for tips so this guy got a 50 egyptian note and thought he won the lottery!

over all be open minded, luxor is a lovely place, much better than Cairo!

I will add photos later!

“Luxor Holiday 17 June 2008”

We are still in Egypt and will be returning to Oxfordshire this week. The Sheraton is still being renovated and half the rooms in the still unavailable. If you are looking for Gold and Silver do not shop in Sheraton Shop as VERY expensive try Yorkshire Bobs just outside the Hotel. The hotel Staff are the very best we have found on our many visits to Luxor. Phil & Debbie Oxon.

“Needs updating”

Recently returned from Egypt where we did a Nile Cruise for 7 days, then 3 days in Cairo and last 4 days in Luxor. Turned up at the Sheraton after dropping off other holiday makers at Sonesta st george and Nile Palace. The first impression of hotel was a good one, the lobby/foyer area and restaurant have all been recently updated and they are in the process of upgrading the hotel rooms. We were given keys to a chalet which was clean and tidy but certainly needed upgrading. Asked to be moved into hotel and the room they showed us was small and also in need of upgrading so decided to move to a different hotel which was of far better quality.

I am sure that once the upgrading has been complete this resort will be a nice place to stay but at the moment wouldnt recommmend it to other holidaymakers. The prices in the restauarants and bars are over inflated as they have a captive audience as it is just on the outskirts of a busy street (15 min walk away) and you have to walk down a unlit street to get to any other restauarants, shops etc.

“Nice Location - But Old Rickety Shabby rooms”

Its Located just at the Nile Bay and you can go take the Fallukkha the moment you come out of the hotel. But the rooms Suck big time, bad old interiors, Dirty Carpet. The Whole rooms needs to be broken down and renovated, probably combine 2 rooms and make 1 room, as the rooms now are really small. Specially when you are at the Nile bay you would like to stay in a Bigger more comfortable luxurious room. I dont know whether there are any better option in Luxor for the stay. Beware of the Horse Carriage Guys - they just follow and harass foreigners for a ride. They will offer you cheap price and take you to the Souvenir shops where they get commission.

“Renovation about due!”

Sheraton Luxor Resort

Having stayed at the Sheraton Luxor regularly for the last 12 years, I find myself agreeing that it needs renovating, particularly the bedrooms, the ground floor already having been done, -we always have a Nile view room, usually on the 3rd floor. Half of the rooms have been closed off and the updating started, should be finished by Xmas 08, I look forward to seeing the new rooms. This time I found the mattress very uncomfortable, with a big dip on the side where people had been sitting on the edge of the bed, the net curtains needed renewing and in general the room looked tatty and worn, hence the refit.
The patio waiter asked for cash for our drinks, and added LE30 to the bill! We always sign so it didn't work, but he was clearly annoyed that we insisted on signing, and disappeared when we noticed that the amount on the printed bill was considerably less than he had asked us for. On complaining to the management they were angry and promised to put a stop to this - therefore always ask for the printed bill and check it! The Italian and the excellent Indian were as good as always, but watch the prices have gone up quite a bit, we also used the Royal Oak just round the corner from Yorkshire Bob's, very good value. Ahmed and Ramadan work hard round the pool, sad to notice a lot of younger people don't bother to tip them. Watch out for the waiter with glasses, who appears to obsessively pester unaccompanied young female guests! In general can't fault the helpful and friendly staff, great location and we'll continue to use it and recomend it. Fortnight we were there, 14 - 28 May, the air quality was terrible and we returned home, as did several others, with bad bronchitis and a heavy cold!! the diesel fumes from the cruise boats polluted the air, which was very still.
