We stayed here as part of a Cruise/Cairo/Luxor combo with Archers Direct.
I suspect people will be worried about the building works. We asked for a quiet room through Archers because we already knew about the works. We got a 1st floor room and were not bothered once by the works, even when we were outside we didn't notice it. I agree with other people though that the works won't be finished by September!
The Sonesta is a lovely hotel and is in a brilliant location. It's pool and terrace area is directly on the Nile. The pool area is fantastic with comfortable loungers and attentive staff.
The breakfast buffet was great, plenty of choice including cereals, pastries, omlettes, fruit, local dishes and a Japenese selection! We tried the Italian restaurant which was nice enough but we had better (and cheaper) meals whilst there. I wouldn't recommend half board. There are plenty of other options within walking distance.
The rooms are lovely, very clean.
Locally would recommend John&Johns at the Gaddis Hotel - 5 minute walk. Great steak and chips for £4.50 and really friendly service.
Also, Moonlight Travel across the street for local trips. A fraction of the price the tour operators charge and you all end up on the same buses/hot air balloons! There's nothing more irritating than hearing someone in the same basket say they paid £25 for the balloon flight when you've paid £60+!
