“The Morris - what can I say”

Morris Hotel

Eight of us visited Luxor and the Morris for my sixtieth birthday. We had an absolutely wonderful time, not least that we all gelled together and had fun but also with the support of the excellent staff at the Morris. That is the reason I am giving it an excellent holiday overall.

I’m trying to be very objective of our stay especially after reading recent reviews. Because there was eight of us and we all were up for a good time it meant that the disco was open, the management put on an excellent Egyptian night complete with dervish dancer, snake charmer and belly dancer and last but not least a wonderful party complete with cake, singing and dancing waiters and staff for my birthday. I think if you were by yourself it would be pretty quiet as although there were other guests we did not see them often and few ate in.

As regards rooms, they were quite spacious but needed that finishing touch and a little jaded They were cleaned every day and the sculptures were amazing- we too had the crocodile but on my birthday had a mummy on the bed – amazing. The food was passable – we went half board and although freshly cooked was very similar, soup, salad, chicken or fish plus desert. The ultimate was the night the waiter stated the cake was dry and we would do better if we had tea or coffee with it! Breakfast was OK.

We had great trips out organised at fabulous prices by Amhed at Jolleys including an memorable hot air balloon trip, Karnack and Luxor temples and we did the Hora and Ramsieum as we had already visited the Valley of the Kings where the rest of the party went. We were also given a complimentary felucca trip which we all enjoyed the peace and tranquillity of it all

Yes the hotel is not finished, is in a downtown areas but it is proper Egypt after all right outside your door and we never felt uncomfortable. The roof pool has a gorgeous view and the lunches good and reasonable but it is another area that could be made better with just a little thought and a very small amount of money. We think there was a cash flow problem- they were not expecting our penchant for red wine and still ran out and wanted us to pay cash for our bills which some of our group found uncomfortable.

However we had an amazing and memorable time and thanks to all at the Morris who made it so special. If you want to know more please get in touch.

I booked this on the strength of the reviews on this site and I'm really struggling to understand what sort of hotel standards most of these reviewers are used to. Yes, I have been to Egypt before & yes I appreciate their standards are not as high as in Europe but this really was the worst hotel I've ever stayed in. Other reviewers have commented on the hotel not being finished but this has no impact on your stay...well on the several occassions the lift wasn't working during my week's stay & you have to climb the stairs to the rooftop pool through an eerie building site I would consider that affecting my stay! The hotel is in a very run down area, yes, I know it's Luxor but from what I saw there was certainly much better on offer. It was pretty empty when I was there, the Italian restaurant wasn't open the whole time, in fact it was deserted on that floor when I looked a few times for signs of life. I felt pretty uncomfortable being the only person in the dining room on many evenings with the staff just hanging around and staring at you, similarly on the rooftop at the pool area - this was frequently deserted and many times there weren't even any staff up there. The rooms are basic & were kept reasonably clean but due to the poor quality fixtures & fittings they already appear quite run down & there were some odd wires sticking out of the bathroom walls & the shower curtain kept collapsing. I always check hotel reviews on this website before booking anything and this is the first time I've been let down - I would question whether all these reviews are genuine however or whether the management of this hotel have got all their friends and family to post them?! Despite the Morris, I had a wonderful time in Luxor and wouldn't let it spoil my holiday - I just spent as much time as possible away from the hotel!

It was based on the reviews about this hotel that I made my decision to book it - And now I have been and spent 7 miserable nights there so tell me, What Are You All Talking About?! It was rubbish! We hated it. Apart from us the only other guests it seemed were the local people and probably relations of the owners, and the comments are so glowing I'm wondering if he scripted the reviews on this website! I also checked out the reviews on other websites, prior to booking our holiday, and they said the hotel was horrible but I took the view that not everyone will be pleased all of the time, but really, when we got there I wanted to leave straight away, but unfortunately we had no rep or agent who could enable us to change hotels.

At the Morris there were none of the usual holiday maker types except for a couple of small groups of Japanese. Most nights my husband and I were the only two people in the dining room and it seemed in the whole hotel, it was eerie.

Judging from the condition of our room it looked like the building is very old but they want you to believe it is new. It is unfinished, like many of the buildings in this depressed downtown area where they begin construction and then seem to abandon the project, and so they remain in this state for years, as shells of buildings.

It was horrible living in this hotel for a week. There is no glass to the windows above the second floor and the stairways are closed and look like a construction site that is a health and safety hazard, it is a hard hat and steel toecap boots area. Don't believe what they say about this hotel - it was not built in 2006, it is much much older, I have pictures of our room and bathroom to prove it because I couldn't believe my eyes. It does not have 175 rooms and 5 suites, certainly not for occupation by humans, birds maybe, because they can fly right in through the unglazed windows.

For the first 5 nights that we were there was a horrible smell of cooking and the air was greasy. It hit you as soon as you entered the hotel, we were told later it was because the kitchen ventilation system had broken down. I'd bought some perfume in duty free and I felt fresh and good in my holiday clothes, but not for long, we had to put up with having that smell of grease on our clothes and in our hair.

The staff were very pleasant and it would have been unkind to complain but we did get the feeling that there were some family members amongst the staff too. It must have been a family member who told us that the hotel would be completed in one month! I think that they thought we were stupid - well I do feel stupid for being virtually their only two guests for 7 nights.

It was a very long 7 nights, in the Morris Hotel. Horrible, Horrible.

“You're foolish to stay anywhere else in Luxor; the Morris is the best!”

My husband and I recently returned from a trip to Egypt. We have so many wonderful things to say about the Morris Hotel that we don't know where to begin! After spending four days in Luxor, we can honestly say this is our Egyptian home away from home, and if ever in Luxor again, we will go back without a doubt. To give you a couple of examples...

1. Our train was meant to arrive at Luxor train station at 5am but was delayed. Ehab (the hotel owner) and Sammy (in charge of housekeeping) were waiting there when we arrived at 7am to escort us to the hotel. They waited for two hours for us and didn't complain a bit!

2. Upon arrival, we were pleasantly surprised by the interior of the hotel. We sipped on our welcome beverage and relaxed in the lobby for a bit, and then Ehab let us check into our room early with no questions asked. (He also let us check out late on our last day, because our train didn't leave until 8pm).

3. Once you've had the chance to review other hotels in the area, you'll find that most are terribly more expensive than the Morris. After our stay there, we encouraged Ehab to raise the rates! Don't be fooled by the low rates here, it doesn't mean low quality. It just means you're getting a really super deal!

4. On our first night in the hotel, Ehab introduced us to a group of guys from Wales, and we ended up hitting it off and going on a few Egyptian adventures with them. Ehab also walked us over to Pub 2000 across the street and introduced us to Magdy, the owner of the restaurant. We had several delicious meals and several cold beers with Magdy and the Welsh guys. It proved to be a great finish to an evening. Normally we aren't the type to go to the same restaurant more than once while on holiday, but we couldn't resist multiple visits to Pub 2000, and much the same as Morris Hotel, we were treated like family.

5. Ehab organized several events for us, including a tour of Luxor, a camel ride, a hot air balloon ride, and a special anniversary dinner with the hotel restaurant to ourselves and our own personal waiter. It was a great time!

6. Upon departure from the hotel, we inadvertently left our passports behind the front desk. We were on the overnight train to Cairo when we realized the mistake. Without hesitation, Ehab's response was, don't worry! And we knew not to worry because we were sure Ehab would take care of us. By the time we had to depart our Cairo hotel, Ehab had a courier arrive with our passports.

7. Finally, just a general statement that the hotel was clean, safe, and the rooftop pool was a great feature.

We can't stress enough that the Morris Hotel should be your destination of choice in Luxor. We'd also like to send a sincere thank you to Ehab, Sammy, Magdy, and the rest of the folks at Morris Hotel and Pub 2000. It's so refreshing to be welcomed in a foreign country by people that understand the value of good customer service, and go out of their way to make you comfortable. Thanks to you, we had a really great Luxor holiday. You're the best!

“Wonderful Holiday Experience”

Morris Hotel

My partner Julie and I have just got back after a week at the Morris Hotel - I have two main comments: 1 week was not enough & Can't wait to go back!
I read the reviews prior to booking and these were partly why we booked the Morris, also because we liked the look of the rooftop terrace / swimming pool and the central location. To quote 'you can never keep all of the people happy all of the time' is a fact, but I think that the glass will always be half empty for some people. If, like us you have the 'half full' philosophy I guarantee you will love this hotel. When I say hotel I would emphasise that the experience was made so very good by the staff themselves who we found without exception to be friendly, courteous and professional to the extreme – 6 star. From the moment we walked into the reception until the moment we left we were treat like VIPs and as the week progressed, somehow also like part of a big family. We booked half board and were very happy with the food and service. The cost of extras such as bar and pool snacks were also reasonable, including an excellent 5 course dinner on the last night. Having booked independently we had no rep, but didn’t need one as we were so well looked after and in fact ultimately saved a fortune by booking locally with expert guidance from the hotel staff. Our holiday experience in Luxor was exceptional and I can honestly say that it could not have been as good had we not stayed at the Morris. We visited other hotels during the week including a top 5 star, which was beautiful and might more suit people who prefer a resort cocoon, but for us even at the same price we would not dream of staying anywhere else in Egypt!
