“Beautiful Property”

We stayed at the Norfolk Hotel on for two nights in January before leaving on a photo safari and during the day on our return to Nairobi. The room was fine, the service excellent, the property beautiful and the food delicious. There are still renovations underway, but we were out most of the day so we didn't notice the noise.
The inner courtyard is beautiful - hard to imagine that you are in such a big city.

“Not a good experience”

Our family stayed there twice - both times for one night. The hotel is going through a renovation which may account for what we encountered. (One of the dining rooms isn't operating.) The first time was fine - we were upgraded and our stay was very brief (less than 8 hours). The second stay was longer and was very unhappy. We were given two rooms which were not habitable. The rooms were dingy and dirty. There were dirty glasses and plates all over the area outside of the rooms. The AC didn't work and it must have been a permanent situation because they had large standup fans in each room. When we complained we were told the rooms were warm because they were above the kitchen. Obviously, this is not an acceptable explanation. We were moved to two rooms - one of which was fine, one of which was not. The 'not fine' room was small and dark, but we decided to accept it. Dinner was expensive and mediocre with all of our food cold or lukewarm. We sent most of it back to be re-heated. After going to sleep, our phone rang. The voice said, "We are having problems with our system. Could you tell us what your names are?" This sounded like a trick to me, so I hung up and called back the front desk. They confirmed that this was them calling and they were having problems. We gave them our names and thought that was that. Ten minutes later, there was a knock on our door. It was a bellman delivering a back - which wasn't ours. After we told him this, it was obviously difficult to go back to sleep. We complained to the manager and he told us he would be get back to us. There have been obvious problems in the country since that time, so it's not surprising that we haven't heard back yet.

All in all, we were very unhappy with our stay.

“Building site: stay away till the refurbishments are completed”

Some 20 years ago we visited the Norfolk for drinks only. Finally the time had come to stay overnight. When we arrived we were shocked, the place is one big building site, I guess we were lucky as it was X-mas, no construction work was going on. The famous Delamere Terrace isn’t there at the moment. Also the tropical gardens are used for the construction activities. The room itself was ok but ‘tired’, clearly needing an upgrade. For example, the water pressure was so low that taking a shower wasn’t a real option. Also, one needed to wait 15 minutes or so to flush the toilet again. The X-mas lunch was ok but very expensive for what was on offer. I guess the only plus was that we slept well as there were only a few quest around so it was fairly quit. Bottom-line, stay away from the Norfolk till the refurbishments are completed and use the House of Waine instead!

“Under construction”

The Norfolk Hotel is being renovated through Mar 08. They try to conceal it, but there is still daily construction noise (pounding, power tools).

This is a pricey hotel even with renovation going on. I became ill and had to stay an extra day; they charged me $485 for one night.

“Expensive Hotel - some v.v.poor rooms”

Fairmont The Norfolk

Oh dear, where do I start ? we stayed twice during a recent safari and the rooms we got on the two stays were miles apart in quality- you couldnt believe the difference - the first room we got was pleasant and clean, nothing amazing considering the price they were charging but it was ok, but boy oh boy, the room we got on the 2nd visit was horrible, awful smell of smoke, the shower didnt work, cracked tiles in the bathroom, huge airconditioning fans outside the room (kept us awake all night), carpets stained, pillows smelt, we went down to reception to be asked to be moved and the reception staff didnt even make eye contact and said very rudely 'no more rooms' - we couldnt believe the money they were charging for the room, it was barely a 2 star room, I know there are renovations going on, but the bottom line is they shouldnt be selling rooms that are meant to be 4/5 star that are clearly only 2 star quality. Having said that the meal we had was lovely and the breakfast buffet was nice too. Sorry, I wont be back again........
