We came to this hotel after our stay at Beijing Grand Hyatt. Since I wasn't too pleased with my Beijing experience and I read quite a few review mentioning Beijing Grand Hyatt as the best hotel, I braced myself for my Tibetan experience and really lower my expectation.
Our guide mistakenly took us to shangbala hotel. My heart sank when I saw the shangbala hotel (dinky and dirty window from the outside though very pleased with the location). Luckily, I realized that it was not the hotel I booked earlier.
When I arrived at House of Shambala, my heart sank again as the hotel was located inside the alleyway. But as soon as I came inside and greeted warmly by the hotel staff, all the apprehension went away. We got room 202 and 203 and I love the decor rightaway. We all know that we went to Tibet for the cultural experience, not for the 5 star luxury, and yes, this includes the chanting and the dog barking.
The hotel and the room decor give me the feeling of being in an exotic location, away from my day to day stress.
The highlights of this hotel:
- Friendly staff, all of them. Did I say that it's much better than Beijing Grand Hyatt staff?
- Unlimited hot water supplied to the room.
- the decor - love the meditation sections.
- nice bathroom - no problem with hot water and decent pressure.
- Great Indian food in the restaurant. Love the vegetable and chicken tika.
- Love the rooftop and the view.
- come to love the location. Less touristry and I get to feel the cultural experience from the Tibetan people with Tibetan houses/buidling nearby. It's really 5 mins from Barkhor and Jokhang if you take the alleyway.
However, I think there are certain things that this hotel could improve that would make it a much better experience for its guests:
- some lighting fixtures do not work, although it got fixed quickly. However, things did get broken easily. I also feel the lighting is inadequate. On one hand, it's part of the decor, on the other hand, I have tough time reading books after the sunset.
- room 202 has slight smell from the bathroom and I had to request incense from the lobby back and forth as it's not always available in the room. Room 203 is fine.
- On my last day, the whole hotel got a brown out. I was fighting a flu and couldn't see a thing, end up jamming my toes on the way to the bathroom.
- The spa next door - my God, I got the worst massage in my life. As a massage buff, I had it all (thai, javanese, chinese, deep tissue). I could handle some strong pressure but the tibetan massage I got was so hard, it felt like I got the beating of my life. There are 4 of us and only one person got tolerable massage (he didn't get bruises afterward). Definitely save your money and maybe visit massage from the blind instead.
- Strange thing (I heard this from other guests), if I walk outside the hotel, I didn't get much of AMS but inside, I feel I get worse. Maybe poor insulation?
- Phone in the room is not working - as some previous poster said, it's only for decoration. Luckilly I stay at the 2nd floor, but when our guide called, it was raining outside and since we still experienced AMS, we had to take the stairs and ran through the water to answer the phone. not quite an easy feat with all those headache from AMS.
Overall, compared to other hotels I have seen in Tibet, I still think this is probably one of the better choice. If I come back, I think my choice would be between Kyichu and House of Shambala.
I got pictures of house of shambala and more review on my trip report here:
