The Sheraton Media is a fairly large hotel somewhat on the outskirts (west) of the downtown. The lobby is very spacious and attractive. I stayed on the Executive floor. Room was spacious, especially the bathroom, with nice marble touches. The staff were friendly and got to know my name on only a four day stay. Breakfast was excellent. There are several restaurants on the grounds, and the Thai restaurant is quite good. I was sad that there was no Indonesian restaurant at the hotel.
The hotel has the standard security perimeter with the car inspections when driving in and metal detectors. It's about a 10 minute cab ride to downtown. There is a mosque nearby, and the call to prayer can be heard late into the night, even on the high floors of the hotel.
Yes, it's in a run down part of Jakarta, as one reviewer indicated, but I have yet to see a part of Jakarta that isn't run down. It's not safe to walk anywhere from the hotel, but this is standard practice anywhere in Jakarta. You should take a cab anywhere. And for what it's worth, I was once given the same warning about not walking around outside at a Hyatt in Chicago (McCormick Place), so I guess it's all relative. Perhaps the rooms smell a bit musty, but buddy, you're in the tropics - everything does.
This isn't the fanciest hotel in Jakarta - try the Hyatt downtown for that. But it's a solid, reasonably priced hotel.
