It was our first time to go to Boracay.
We booked a flight with Cebu Pacific to Kalibo, they had a seat sale. But Kalibo airport was about a 2 hour bus ride away from Caticlan where the port is for transport to Boracay. We had booked our stay at the Regency for 5 days, which included breakfast and dinner buffet and the transport from Kalibo to Caticlan and Caticlan to Boracay. That was a good decision, because the Regency is one of the good hotels on the island. The bus was airconditioned and comfortable and the hotel people had someone greet us at the airport in the person of some tour agency. When we reached Caticlan, the people who were booked in other hotels were dropped off in a port area that looked like a regular marketplace, and people who were booked with "5 star" hotels were dropped off in a much nicer and safer area. Cold bottled water was given to each passenger, which was refreshing after a two hour bus ride. Our luggages were all taken care of, we did not have to lift a thing. We just had to give the porters tips, which for us was okay because that was their means of livelihood anyway. What is P20.00 each for these people who are at least trying to make a decent living by carrying luggages? Besides it was very convenient for us not to be lifting our luggages, specially when we had kids with us. The transport from Caticlan to Boracay and from the port to the hotel in Boracay was also great. Just more porters...so if you're going bring lots of change in pesos. There were also port fees in every stop we made...what can I say...maybe the DOT can make this more organized as it was a mayhem, good thing we had the hotel representatives looking out for us.
Anyway, the hotel was beautiful and clean. The people were mostly nice, they just need to smile more, and need to greet their guests more. Sometimes we would smile or say hello to staff and they just bow their heads or just ignore us. The best person who always had a smile on her face and always said hello and how are you was Riza. She was a splash of cold water on the face on a hot humid day. Wish all the staff were like her. And the towel guy and our housekeeping people were very nice, too.
Our room was great, it faced the pool and was just a few steps away from the Prince Hendrik Restaurant. I would rate it as a 4 star hotel, the bathroom was nice and clean with a bathtub, the towels and sheets were always clean and fresh. (Don't forget to leave a small tip for the housekeeping people, just like what you would do if you went on a vacation holiday in another country.Being nice to the people who work there goes a long way.) Although the room safe was indeed broken, but we did not lose anything.
The food was okay, we expected more seafood, it was a mixture of Filipino and Western dishes, but more on the western side. So we ended up buying seafood from the market and just having it cooked in the D'Talipapa and just ate our hearts out...cheap and very good. we always had our breakfast at the hotel, though. The check out was a nightmare, we waited for more than half an hour before we could be cleared because their "system was down." But overall the hotel was good. And the beach was patrolled by a security guard and hotel staff, you won't need to worry much about your stuff while swimming in the beach.
Be careful of the people who offer boat rides and island hopping tours, make sure you ask them where you are going and if the waters are not too rough to go all around the island. Buy the food you like to eat in the market yourself if you're going island hopping, and stay with the cooks, too when you reach the picnic island. And if you like snorkelling, bring your gear along its expensive to rent there.
The hotel is big and had lots of amenities with a long stretch of beach which is well guarded...just wish they could offer an all inclusive package just like in Mexico or Carribean...I'd like to recommend it to my friends here in Canada but the rates are still expensive and not comparable to other destinations.
The beach is worth all the travels we had to do...truly one of the best beaches in the world....maybe they can work it out with Cebu air or even PAL to have an all inclusive package...they would certainly have more tourists coming.
