My hustband and I are currently living in Singapore, and we wanted to treat ourselves to a little "getaway" for Christmas this year. We picked the Oriental based upon the many great reviews on this site. We booked the "Christmas Spendour" package directly on the Oriental's website, promising a spacious City Suite with "oversized tub" and seperate shower. We checked in on Dec. 24th for one night, including breakfast at Melt - the World Cafe.
First of all, when we checked in, there was no City Suite available and the receptionist told us that she was "upgrading" us to a harbour view room. This was not true, because the harbour/ocean view room was much smaller than the City Suite would have been. Unfortunately, I only found this out after our stay when I went back to the website to compare the rooms. Duped from the start!
The room was ok - nice size, quite clean, and the surround sound on the stereo was very nice - we could hook up our iPod and listen to Christmas carols, and watch movies in surround sound. The tub was definitely NOT oversized. In fact, it was tiny - asian sized.
The breakfast buffet at Melt was a nice spread with a bit of asian flavours along with western favourites. The service was not that great, we waited 25 minutes after being seated for someone to come by to offer us coffee. Throughout breakfast I had to get up to go and summon someone to please fill our coffee cups - definitely not 5 star service. At the end of our meal, we also got the bill and we had to remind them at checkout that breakfast was included in our package and had them remove the charges. Check your bill!!
The pool area is in desperate need of a makeover - the yellow lounger covers are dirty and grimy, and the towels provided are frayed and faded. Also, no drinks are served around the pool so if you want that tropical cocktail, forget it. Also, very crowded with loads of screaming children in a quite small area. There is also contruction going on next door on the Marina so be prepared to listen to a lot of noise.
We went for spa treatments on xmas day and it was really nice. Except there are no spa facilities such as jacuzzi, whirlpool, sauna or steambath. Basically, you go in get your massage and get out again. Nothing special and not really worth the SGD$165 I paid for a 85 minute massage. My husband got the "Shiatsu" massage but was dissapointed because they didn't even use the bars from the ceiling to walk on his back. He said it was a plain old dry Thai massage - not Shiatsu at all!
I would not go to this hotel again - a bit overpriced and over-rated in my opinion. Next time, we'd rather go to the Ritz.
