“Excellent Hotel”

Carlton Hotel Singapore

We stayed at the Carlton for five nights on the 18th floor with a glorious view over Raffles and the City. The hotel is excellent withn the room being spacious and comfortable. The bathroom, whilst not being large, was clean and adequate for our needs. The Hotel Front Desk Staff were friendly and helpful and happy to help with any problem.

The swimming pool was warm and the surrounding very comfortable with free chilled water available from the pool bar. We booked the Hotel via the Singapore Stopover package via Singapore Airlines whose hop on coach service picks up outside Raffles just a few meters down the road.

Around the corner along Victoria Street is an excellent eating area and a little further along there is Bugis Junction shopping centre full of stalls from food to clothing etc. At the rear of the Hotel is a 7/11 store for any needs and Raffles Plaza is on the other side of the Hotel for more exciting shopping.

Great Hotel, we'll stay again

City centre, easy walking to Orchard Road shops and Marina Square. One block from Raffles. Clean and comfortable room; helpful desk staff. Used by Emirates airline staff so presumably they're as happy as I was!

“Rising prices”

I stayed at the Carlton in April last year. I loved it there. The room was clean and spacious, and I found the cleaning and lobby staff very friendly and helpful.

I may be heading to Singapore again this year and was surprised to see that prices at the Carlton have hiked considerably on last year's rates. I'm not so sure my room (in the old wing) or the main reception area and facililites would do justice to these new prices. I understand that the Carlton is making imrovements to the hotel, but surely the price hikes should be coming after these renovations etc are (mostly) complete.

Thank you very much for having taken the time to post your feedback on this forum and your complimentary comments on our staff and hotel.

We appreciate your concern over the increased room rates, however as in all markets, rates are set based on demand and supply. Singapore has recently enjoyed periods of very high demand and as such the city has recorded higher room rates than in the past.

In addition, Singapore's annual inflation rate hit a 25-year high of 6.6% in January 2008 with the projection of staying above 6.5 percent for the first half of the year, in line with price increases worldwide driven by higher food and fuel costs. Coupled with the affirmative economic performance in the hospitality industry across Asia Pacific, the demand of hotel rooms and its corresponding supply, this year’s rate is adjusted to better reflect the market sentiments.

We look forward to be of service to you again in the not too distant future.

“Good value - excellent location!”

Carlton Hotel Singapore

My husband and son stayed here the night before the inaugural A380 flight. Looking for a 'value for money' hotel, we came across the Carlton - even better - it was available with inclusive breakfast using Airmiles!
I had a few reservations as I was not travelling myself so emailed the hotel prior to the visit and received excellent customer service even before their trip.
Their comments were:
Easy transfer from Changi airport with only one change on MRT, even in rush hour.
The hotel had been advised about early arrival and had arranged early check-in as the hotel room was free - a real bonus after a 14 hour flight!
The room on the 14th floor was clean, no evidence of 'smoke scent' either in rooms or corridors. Bathroom was quite basic but adequate. Lifts worked perfectly!
View was really good - Swimming pool, Raffles City, St. Andrew's Church, Singapore skyine and could just make out the tip of the Flyer.
Breakfast was good - a buffet that started at 6a.m. - management offered a 'take away' breakfast if this was not early enough.
Reception organised a taxi back to the airport - S$35.

Generally, they found the Carlton good value - it doesn't claim to be a 5* hotel, it is undergoing modernisation and a new wing is being built. The new wing will obscure some of the views though.
As in many hotels we have visited, management are often keen to sort out problems if they are made aware of them before or during your stay - customer service was certainly good here!

“Avoid this Hotel”

Carlton Hotel Singapore

Let's start with internet access at $27/day from a wired link in your room -- might be high for wireless access, but excessive for wired links in this high-tech city (of course, they're outsourcing the service to Malaysia, so who knows). Then, despite the service stating you'll have time remaining after checkout, you don't.

The floors (at least in the "old" highrise) reek of smoke, and the beds are like boards (firm is fine, but these are something else again). If you get stuck here by your travel agent, like I did, avoid the rooms by the elevators, unless you really like the sounds from the shafts (26 floors) all night. International direct calls are problematic and spotty. The elevators are plagued by glitches. Certain ones keep forgetting floors entered and send you back to the lobby, and others take you to your floor and...don't open -- you have to press the "open door" key repeatedly and hope it happens before the elevator goes to another call. Then you can get to your door, 20+ flights up, and have your room key not work.

Oh, and if you think being assigned to a crap room on a "Carlton Club" floor gets you into the Club, you're wrong. Unlike chains like Marriott, Sheraton, Hyatt, and even some better Holiday Inns, no such courtesies apply here.

You'd be a fool to stay here, and I won't ever do so again. Management wanted to have a chat just *after* I'd checked out. Not exactly a helpful service. But at that point there's really not much to be done, anyway. Stay elsewhere and have a better time in Singapore.

FEEDBACK FOR ROOM ACCOMMODATION FROM 17 TO 20 MARCH 2008

Thank you very much for posting your detailed feedback on this forum following your recent stay at the Carlton Hotel Singapore. We apologise that we did not meet your expectations on this occasion and please allow us to provide a couple of clarifications in our review.

The high-speed broadband Internet access rates are in-line with hotels in Singapore for this outsourced service. Furthermore I understand that the wireless service has been made available to you well beyond the time you have checked out from the Hotel.

As for the Elevators, please be assured that our guest lifts are constantly being monitored and serviced according to the regulatory stipulations to ensure optimum performance and safety for all lift passengers’ comfort. Despite immediate follow-up and Investigation, contrary to your comments the hotel has not experienced any technical malfunction reports pertaining to any of the guest lifts.

Again your feedback with regards to ‘spotty’ international calls around the said time and date appear to be an isolated case as no other adverse comments were received nor from the national service provider.

Due to the high occupancy on the day of your arrival, you were assigned a room located on the Club Floor, although you had purchased a package via your Travel Agent for a standard room. This room category upgrade does not automatically include entitlement to the Club Lounge Benefits and we were disappointed by your unexpected reaction towards our associate trying to assist you.

We also regret that you did not allow our Front Office Manageress to address your concerns in person when she met you during checkout. Several previous attempts to contact you prior had failed, leaving the point of your departure the only alternative.

We trust that the above explanation has adequately clarified your concerns.

Yours Sincerely,

Carlton Hotel Singapore
