Santiago travel agent booked my wife and me for 3 nights at this Puerto Varas Hotel. Based on Tripadvisor reviews, I specifically asked for a room in the new section of the hotel. We were placed in the old section in the smallest room I have ever seen, one floor above the main entrance, with its window overlooking the entrance, where the tour buses disgorged the hordes and sat with diesel engines producing both noise and smoke pollution. Across the road, heavy construction equipment plied back and forth on a constrution project.
Upon request, we were moved to a room in the new section, with a view towards the lake. The room was almost monastery like in its decor and its furniture The walls and floors wer in need of redecorating. The dull weather did nothing to improve our spirits, so we jumped in the car to book a table at the Ibis restaturant in the town. To pass the time before dinner, we went for a drive up the east coast of the lake, to find a restaurant at a place called Yan Kee Way Lodge, which was advertised as being the best in southern Chile and where we thought we would book for dinner, the following night. Long story short, we were so impressed with the place, we moved out of the Cabanas del Lago, losing our prepaid full payment, but it was worth it.
The Cabanas del Lagos is just not for us.
