Other reviewers advised to stay in the new part of the hotel but that was at a substantially higher rate than our travel agent booked us at. The room was small, no AC and construction jack hammers were blasting 10 feet from our room at 3:00pm when we were taking a nap. I believe this was only temporary and not a major project. I'm not sure if there are any great hotels in Puerta Varas. Nobody from other hotels on lake crossing had much good to say about their hotels. For reference, I am used to staying in good hotels...this trip included Rio de Janiero Marriott, Santiago Ritz Carlton, and Buenos Aires Soifetel.

The shower are made for local "mapuches" that are shorter than 5.5in. The hotel has a new area and an old area. Make sure you stay on a Executive suite which is a basic international suite, otherwise you may fall to the catacombs of the very old area. The bathroom and the bed were too small.

Hotel is nice, has both newer and better rooms and an older wing. Most have lake views. Hotel restaurant bad. There are many nice restaurants in the area. Maitre'd not helpful and food bland, bad, and cheap. Even frozen peas can be made even worse buy this kitchen! Desk staff nice, but not very knowledgable. Hotel very clean and comfortable, great location.
Breakfast staff needs improvement in service. They'll turn the lights off and not reset table when breakfast hours are coming to an end. Lights were being turned off only 15 minutes after 10 a.m., the 'end' of breakfast.
With two new hotels opening this next year, The Hotel Cabanas will realize that they no long have the monopoly on nicer rooms in the town.

This is probably the nicest hotel in Puerto Varas, situated on a hill overlooking the lake and the snowcapped volcanoes in the distance. We stayed one night, and had a drink as we watched a group of windsurfers gear up and take off across the lake as the sun sank in the west. The room was large with two Queen-sized beds and nothing fancy...but comfortable with a large tub and great windows. One problem: the nights were getting chilly at the beginning of Chile's fall and we had trouble getting the heat turned on. Not sure if it ever was. Breakfast was included for the $160 a night charge and featured the usual array of cereals, pastries, yogurt, overcooked scrambled eggs, sausages and, as throughout Chile, wonderful fruits and juices. One drawback, the large groups travelling by bus and absolutely stampeding the breakfast tables before they checked out. Intimidating! We found the front desk super-helpful, even helping to make reservations for us in Santiago. Maybe it helps that I speak Spanish.
